Get Your Semester Off to a Great Start

The Spring 2024 semester officially begins on Saturday, January 13.

Note: American River College will be closed on Monday, January 15 in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

For In-Person Classes — Most in-person classes will have their first session the week of Tuesday, January 16 through Friday, January 19. If you have any questions, contact your instructor.

For Online Classes — Some instructors may start their classes on Saturday, January 13, while some will start on Tuesday, January 16. Regularly check Canvas beginning Saturday, January 13 to see when your class is "live"/published. Don’t see your class? To view unpublished classes in Canvas, click on the “Courses” icon and select “All Courses”.

Don’t Miss out on Great Spring Classes

We know you’re already enrolled for spring, but have you considered taking one more class if you are attending part time? Studies show that students enrolled in 6-9 units who take just one more course are more likely to stick to college, save money, and meet their academic goals sooner (2-3 vs. 5 years).

Taking an additional class will get you closer to graduation, transfer, and the job you want!

Know Your Schedule

Log in to eServices to view your up-to-date class schedule and save it to your phone or print out a copy so you have it handy for the first day of the semester.

For In-Person Classes — In-person classes will have a set day, time, and meeting location (including which campus it will be at). This information will be provided on your class schedule in eServices. Also pay attention to the course's term (ex. full term, second eight-week term) – check the academic calendar for term dates.

For Online Classes — Some classes are synchronous and meet online at specific days and times, while others will be asynchronous and are more self-paced. Check your schedule in eServices to make sure you know which of your classes meet up and put it on your calendar so you don't forget! Even if you don’t have a set meeting time, plan to check Canvas each week and set aside time to do your regular coursework.

How to Find Your Textbooks

Start by looking up your textbooks by course section on the Los Rios Bookstore website. Free store pickup is available at checkout or you can pay to have your textbooks shipped to your house. If you’d like to shop in person, check the website for their days/hours of operation. If you ship your items, they will typically arrive within 4-7 days. Expedited shipping is also available for an additional cost.

Note: Keep your receipt, as it will have the deadline to return textbooks or class materials to the bookstore and receive a refund (as long as the product is in its original condition).

How do I check out a Chromebook from the library?

The ARC Library has a selection of Chromebooks available for students to check out for the semester. You can place a request to hold a Chromebook or you can walk in for a pickup as long as Chromebooks remain available. If you submit a request, the Library staff will email you when your Chromebook is ready.

Chromebooks checked out from the library are due back at the end of the semester. If you have questions about borrowing or renewing your Chromebook for the semester, please contact the Circulation Desk at (916) 484-8455 or email the Library.

To check out a Chromebook from the library you must be:

  • Currently enrolled in at least one class at ARC
  • Have no other Chromebooks currently on loan
  • Have no blocks on your library record due to unreturned or damaged library materials

Parking Update

Parking will be enforced at [College] and all Los Rios campuses during the Srping 2024 semester. Students may park only in designated student parking spaces. Semester permits are available for purchase online via eServices or in person at the Business Services Office. Daily permits cost $2 and can be purchased from designated kiosks only.

Please be sure to follow all other parking rules, such as only parking in handicapped spots if you have the appropriately issued placard and no parking in fire or loading zones, as these violations could result in a ticket.

More About Parking

Your Transit ZipPass

Be sure to download the ZipPass, Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) digital pass that Los Rios students can use to ride the bus and light rail services at no additional cost. All eligible students are charged the Universal Transit Pass (UTP) fee, regardless of whether or not they use the pass, and can access the services by following the steps at the SacRT ZipPass/Universal Transit Pass webpage.

I’m on the Waitlist, Now What?

The waitlist status of a class changes throughout the enrollment period, so you should regularly monitor your waitlist status. After the semester starts on Saturday, January 13, a permission number is required to be added to a class from the waitlist. If your professor gives you a permission number to add the class, follow these Use Permission Number/Enroll from Waitlist instructions.

Permission numbers are only given to you directly from your professor. If you have questions about whether you will be receiving a permission number, contact your professor to ask how they will be managing their waitlist this semester.

Not sure you will be added from the waitlist, but still need another class this semester to stay on track? Check the list of open classes to see if there is another section of the class you are waitlisted in or if there is another class you want to take.

Tech Tips to Get You Started

Canvas: Online and in-person classes both use the Canvas learning system. If you are new to Canvas, check out our Los Rios Canvas "how to" videos to get started or visit the Canvas Getting Started Guide

Apps and Software for Students: Check out the Technology Resources webpage for instructions on how to download software like Microsoft and SacRT’s Zip Pass, plus find information about low-cost or free internet and wi-fi.

Service Central

Students can request IT services or get support for any IT issue through the online Service Central portal. This includes submitting a request for computer support, software (such as Microsoft Word), hardware (such as a Chromebook), or access to tools and systems (for example, Canvas). In this centralized online system, you’ll be able to track your requests online and ultimately receive faster responses from the IT team.

Tips for Online Classes

  • Since online classes don’t require you to meet in person, it can be easy to underestimate how much work they require. Avoid over-scheduling, know the expectations, and actively participate.
  • If you have a class that meets on specific days and times on Zoom, make sure to know your schedule and follow it. Log onto Zoom a little early so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.
  • Regularly check your email, Canvas online class portal, and communicate with your instructor, and use the resources they provide.
  • Manage your time wisely and be aware of deadlines. Limit your social media use. Get online tutoring help early on especially if you’re falling behind.
  • Create structure and routine with a regular study space that is comfortable and has minimal distractions.

Okta and Multifactor Authentication is Here!

As part of the Los Rios Community College District’s ongoing efforts to combat cybercriminals and safeguard student data, Los Rios has launched a new Identity and Access Management System called Okta which requires all students to utilize Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

As of January 4, 2024, every student is required to complete a one-time Okta setup process the first time they attempt to log into most Los Rios applications (e.g., eServices, Google Suite/Gmail, Alma). This is a simple, guided process that takes three minutes to complete and only has to be done once.

Set Up Okta Now

Need Help?

Step-by-step instructions and videos on how to register with Okta, including how to set up your multi-factor authentication, can be found at losrios.edu/okta.

Okta Live Chat Support will also be available to all students through Wednesday, January 31, 2024, to quickly help users troubleshoot any issues encountered. Live chat is the recommended support channel for the quickest response. However, if you are unable to access live chat for any reason, please call (916) 484-8667 or submit a ticket in Service Central.
