Celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Delaware County is proud to join the nation in the recognition of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Observed annually each May, Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a time to reflect upon and celebrate the remarkable role of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander community in our nation’s history. The first celebration traces back to 1978 and is observed annually in May to commemorate the first Japanese who came to the United States in May of 1843.

Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders make our nation more vibrant through diversity of cultures, languages, and religions. Delaware County is proud to have numerous members of the community, schools, businesses, organizations, and members of the County team who work to educate, celebrate, and expand Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander history and culture through education and the arts. This month, we celebrate the leaders, artists, scholars, and other people across Delaware County who keep the culture, history, and traditions alive, respected, and celebrated.

We are also thrilled to announce that the County is co-hosting an Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration this year!

The County of Delaware, Upper Darby Township, Visit Delco PA, the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Philadelphia, and the Delaware County Office of Workforce Development are partnering to host an Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Celebration on May 10, from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m., in Upper Darby.

The free, family-friendly celebration includes a variety of exciting and inspiring performances including Korean Drummers, Giddha-Punjab folk dance, and Zoe Erianna from America’s Got Talent. Residents are also invited to explore an online map to discover local restaurants offering delicious food inspired by Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander heritage and culture.

Delaware County Recognizes May 5-11 as National Correctional Employees Week

Delaware County Council recognized May 5-11 as National Correctional Employees Week during the May 1 public Council Meeting.

Established by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 as a way to thank correctional officers for their service and celebrate their contributions to society, the week serves as an opportunity to honor correctional officers in jails, prisons, and community correctional facilities nationwide. In 1996, Congress expanded the week to include all correctional professionals and employees to provide recognition to the many people who are responsible for care, custody, and control.

On behalf of County Council, Council Member Kevin Madden presented a resolution to Warden Williams and members of her team recognizing National Correctional Employees Week and commending the correctional officers who serve at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility.

“Under the leadership of Warden Williams, these skilled law-enforcement professionals work outside the daily attention of the general public, but their work is vital in maintaining a safe correctional facility for those in our custody and in ensuring the public safety at large,” said Madden, who also serves as the Co-Chair of the Jail Oversight Board. “They rise to meet the daily challenges unique to a corrections facility and serve in this honorable profession with dignity.”

The County’s correctional officers and employees serve admirably in various capacities, including as jail administrators, nurses, mental health professionals, supervisors, social workers, case managers, educators, chaplains, directors, dietary workers, commissary workers, and program coordinators. Under the leadership of Prison Warden Williams, they are responsible for the custody, care, and rehabilitation of thousands of correctional facility residents every year, as well as the maintenance of a safe and secure facility.

“This week provides us an additional opportunity to recognize our employees. The professionals within George W. Hill Correctional Facility are some of the most resilient and resourceful individuals who maintain commitment to fulfilling their duties even when infrastructures fail, population needs change, or resources remain limited, said Warden Williams. “Our staff positively influences the public safety and public health needs of the County of Delaware and we are proud to acknowledge their efforts.”

The George W. Hill Correctional Facility recently celebrated the two-year anniversary since the County’s April 2022 deprivatization of what had been the only privately managed county prison in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The transition of control from the private management firm to full County operational control and management was the result of a multi-year process of study and planning. Under County leadership and direction, the prison is now placing an emphasis on reducing recidivism and providing incarcerated people with stabilizing tools that will better prepare them to successfully transition back into the community.

Celebrating Small Business Week in Delco

Delaware County was proud to host Department of Community and Economic Development Deputy Secretary Rick Vilello in celebration of Small Business Week.

During National Small Business Week, celebrated April 28 - May 4 this year, small business owners are recognized for their determination and drive and for their contributions towards supporting the local economy. The week also serves as a reminder for community members to support small business owners and their local downtown Main Streets.

During his visit, Deputy Secretary Vilello toured downtown Media with local leaders to emphasize the vital impact that small businesses have on the local economy. The tour, hosted by Media Business Authority and accompanied by Delaware County Council Chair Dr. Monica Taylor and the Delaware County Commerce Center, included stops at Stile by Per Lei, Three Potato Four, Earth & State, Ocean City Coffee Co., Greatest Hits Record and Books, and Two Fourteen.

Our Delaware County small business—shops, restaurants, and service providers—grow and flourish with the support of residents. By shopping or dining at local small businesses, residents provide support to their neighbors, help create jobs, and contribute to the local economy.

This week, and every week, we encourage residents to support a small business (or several!) in your community. They are the backbone of our local economy, and we need to have THEIR back!

Celebrating Older Americans Month in Delaware County

Each May, Delaware County Council embraces the opportunity to celebrate National Older Americans Month and shine a spotlight on the contributions of older residents across the County.

Nearly one in every five County residents is a senior. County Council recognizes the contributions of seniors to businesses, volunteer organizations, Veterans’ groups, places of worship, schools, and many other valuable organizations where they invest their time and offer their skills and wisdom. More than ever before, older Americans are working longer and engaging in their communities. Seniors are striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and advocating for themselves and others.

Older Americans Month was first created by President John F. Kennedy in May of 1963 and is a national month of recognition held each May to celebrate the vitality and achievements of older adults. This year’s theme, Powered by Connection, recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. Connectedness plays a vital role in supporting independence and aging in place by combatting isolation, loneliness, and other challenges.

The Senior Living Expo at Harrah’s in Chester

To kick off Older Americans Month, the County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA) held its annual Senior Living Expo on May 3 at Harrah’s in Chester.

The Senior Living Expo featured resources and services provided by vendors ranging from home care agencies and health care systems to County agencies, attorneys, and more. Guests were able to “Ask a Pharmacist” from PerformRx questions regarding medications.

Fair Acres Celebrates 101st Birthday of

Bernice Kuhar

Fair Acres staff and residents were thrilled to gather to celebrate the 101st birthday of Fair Acres resident Bernice Kuhar who turned 101 years young on April 26.

Bernice’s milestone birthday was celebrated with warmth and enthusiasm in the community room of Fair Acres’ Building 5 in Lima. Joining in the celebration were her son Edward and other extended family and local elected leaders. Party goers enjoyed cake and ice cream along with live acoustic guitar music provided by local musician Andy Maher. Laughter and stories filled the air, painting a vivid picture of Bernice's rich life and the bonds she has formed with family and friends over the years.

Bernice, who was born in 1923, lived in Chester until 1941 when she moved to Aston after marrying her high school sweetheart, Edward. Together, they raised three children, Edward, Susan and Diane. Over the years Bernice and Edward's family tree grew many limbs and the Kuhar family now includes 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren, weaving a family story of love, support, and cherished traditions. During their youth, Bernice and her husband enjoyed roller skating at Great Leopard in Chester and going to Wildwood with family and friends.

After raising their three children, Bernice went to work at the Franklin Mint and later worked at a local doctor’s office.

In her free time, Bernice enjoys playing bingo, eating chocolate, telling jokes, and having tea with other residents at Fair Acres. One of Bernice’s favorite hobbies is making miniature prayer pouches, each stitch a testament to her boundless compassion for friends and neighbors at Fair Acres. Rooted in her steadfast Methodist faith, Bernice finds solace and strength, guiding her through each day with unwavering grace and conviction.

Bernice’s mother, who was also a resident at Fair Acres, was herself blessed with longevity and lived until she was 102 years young. Celebrating this milestone with Bernice, her family and friends is more than just a party, it’s a celebration and tribute to a remarkable woman whose life has been characterized by a deep commitment to her family and her faith.

Here's to Bernice Kuhar! May her story continue to inspire and bring joy to all who have the pleasure of knowing her.
