No Sponsorship Needed: Internships and Jobs for F-1 Visa Students

F-1 visa students can often secure internships or entry-level jobs without requiring immediate visa sponsorship. This means that these opportunities may fall under programs like Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allow F-1 students to work in the U.S. during or after their studies without needing additional sponsorship right away.

If the application asks, "Do you need sponsorship?" the answer is "No."

If the application asks, "Do you require future sponsorship?" the answer is "Yes."

You will need to inform your employer that you can work for one year on OPT and then apply for a STEM extension for two years. This extension is a benefit provided by the student visa and does not require sponsorship.

Writing Professional Email

Emails are the most common form of communication used by professors or any other business professional. It is necessary that you write all your emails professionally and communicate all the necessary information in one email and sent to a specific person you need to present your outcome.

Here are 5 tips:

  1. Acknowledge what you hope to receive from the recipient. Choose your wording carefully.
  2. Select who you wish to receive a response. You want to discuss your point with a specific person.
  3. Make a clear subject line. Having a strong subject line can stand out your email for the recipient.
  4. Draft your message and reread it before you send it out. Your goal is to craft a short message with a clear point for the reader to understand it easily.
  5. Keep in mind to respect the recipient's time. Provide the recipient at least two to three business days to respond to your message.

OPT Update: Fee Increase

Effective April 1, 2024, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will increase certain immigration and naturalization benefit request fees. Most notably, the I-765 Application for Employment Authorization will increase from $410 to $470 for online filing applications. For paper-based I-765 applications, the fee will increase to $520. Students applying for OPT and STEM OPT are required to pay the I-765 fee with each OPT/STEM OPT application they submit to USCIS.

For a full list of fee increases, please visit the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website.

OPT Submission for Spring 2024

If you are an international student graduating in the Spring 2024 semester, you may start applying for OPT after January 29, 2024.

Please use the link below to access and complete all required documents for the OPT application:

OPT Information | University Center for International Education

Choose an OPT start date between January 29 – June 25, 2024. If you already have a job offer or are regularly interviewing now, choose an earlier date. If you have not, choose a later date.

PLEASE NOTE: If you have ANY reservations regarding graduation for Spring 2024 semester, please do not apply for OPT until after semester end grades have been posted.

Maintaining status on OPT is still the same as usual.

You are permitted only 90 days of unemployment between the start and end dates on your EAD card. In addition, you are required to report the following information through the SEVP Portal while on OPT within 10 days of the change:

1. When you start a new job.

2. When you change addresses.

3. Periods of unemployment.

4. 6-month validation

Can I travel back to my home country during OPT period?

Please be aware that if you are unemployed for more than 90 days, you will lose your OPT status. Also, during this uncertain time, we do not suggest international travel.
