Kings Levy Information

The Kings Board of Education has placed a 6.4mill Operating Levy on the November 8, 2022, ballot. This is an important ballot issue for the Kings Local School District. Currently, the District is considered to be in fiscal distress by the Ohio Department of Education due to our declining fund balance.

The levy will generate $7.5 million per year to support the day-to-day operations of the District. It will cost the Kings taxpayer $18.67 per month for every $100,000 of true home value.

The Kings budget is projected to have a negative cash balance by 2024. Based on the current Ohio School Funding model, revenues for Kings are not going to increase. In order to continue running the school district with a positive cash balance, as required by law, Kings either needs to pass an operating levy on November 8 or make significant, personnel, student programs, and service reductions. The District's expenses are projected to be higher than income next school year by $7 million. Without new revenue, reductions will need to be made to balance the budget.

Use this easy levy calculator to calculate what this levy will cost you.

The election is only 4 days away. There are several opportunities to vote. The deadline to request an absentee ballot for the November 8 election is November 5. Mailed absentee ballots must be postmarked by November 7 and received by a county board of elections by November 18.

The U.S. Postal Service estimates that it may take two to five days for mailed ballots to be delivered, and no more than two “Forever stamps” cover the return.

Absentee ballots can also be delivered in-person to the Warren County Board of Elections until polls close at 7:30 p.m. on Election Day. Use this link to learn how to register to vote, check your voter registration, apply for an absentee ballot, critical voting deadlines, and more.

Early voting ends at 2 p.m., Monday, November 7. See below for the list of remaining early in-person voting hours at the Warren County Board of Elections.:

Nov. 4: 8 a.m.-7 p.m.

Nov. 5: 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Nov. 6: 1-5 p.m.

Nov. 7: 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

In case you missed it, Kings Superintendent, Greg Sears presented to the Kings Board of Education in a Special Meeting on Monday, October 10, to discuss the $7 million in reductions that will need to happen if the levy does not pass.

Community members are encouraged to visit our Levy FAQ page to learn more. We will continue to add questions to this page as we receive them.

Former Kings Teacher Turns 100

The City of South Lebanon and the South Lebanon Historical Society hosted a surprise birthday celebration for Mrs. Vina Chapman's 100th Birthday. Born November 8, 1922, Mrs. Chapman is the oldest living school teacher from the Kings Local School District.

She's been a resident of South Lebanon since 1952. She started teaching in South Lebanon in 1955 and retired in the late 1970's.

South Lebanon Mayor Jim Smith declared November 8, 2022 as Mrs. Chapman Day in South Lebanon. Several retired Kings teachers were in attendance to celebrate Mrs. Chapman. Kings Superintendent Greg Sears presented Mrs. Chapman with a red stadium blanket with the Kings logo on it.

Happy birthday, Mrs. Chapman!

KHS Engineering Haunted House

This year the Kings High School Engineering III students created an interactive robotic Halloween display called Creepy Clown Circus. They began the design process on the first day of school. The "built from scratch" props feature pneumatic pistons, relays, lights, sound, and a variety of other electronics, including 2 razor scooters to create an incredible Halloween experience.

The students used the Engineering Design Process and Agile Project Management strategies to complete this real-world design challenge. The all-senior class created and programmed all of the elements used in the display that used motion detectors as triggers to scare their fellow students as they found their way through the maze.

KHS Engineering III teacher is Jason Shields. Click below to take a virtual tour of the Creepy Clown Circus!

Help a Kings Family this Holiday Season

For the last 7 years, Kings U Knights, a 501(c)3 organization, has helped provide holiday gifts to Kings students in need. Last year, KingsUKnights was able to raise enough in donations through corporate, faith-based, and individual sponsors to provide holiday assistance for 322 Kings children. The need today is greater than ever.

This year, we are working to see increased awareness and fundraising efforts within our buildings (PTO and club-organized competitions, etc). In previous years, sponsors would sponsor a child and purchase the gifts that were on their wishlist or donate money, and our KingsUKnights volunteers would do the shopping.

This year, we have partnered with Joshua’s Place to provide gift cards to those families benefiting from holiday assistance so that parents can choose appropriate, meaningful gifts for their children. We are hopeful that families, groups, or individuals who would traditionally adopt a family or individual at the holidays would consider donating towards the KingsUKnights initiative to help our own Kings families.

This revamped process will also allow Kings dedicated school counselors to continue their focus on supporting students' mental health, behavior, and academic needs, rather than managing the logistics of matching purchased gifts to students facing economic hardship. We are grateful for your generosity and appreciate your thoughtfulness in helping families overcome the barriers in their lives that cause instability.

Thank you for believing, like us, in these families’ tremendous value and work and in your commitment to helping to preserve dignity.

If you, your classroom, team, or club are interested in donating to help take care of our own students in the Kings School District, follow this link or use the QR code to donate.

All donations are tax-deductible. Questions may be directed to Becky Lemon, Kings Resource Coordinator at blemon@kingslocal.net.

Parents receive approved flyers via email, and they are posted on our digital flyerboard for easy retrieval. Any organization can distribute information to our community by creating an account!
