Hello OOMPH students!
As they say, April showers bring May flowers but for many of us the rains (and snow, hail, etc) have been near constant for months! Wonder what that means for this May… Hoping for some really epic wildflower blooms! When it is wet and windy, some may start to think ahead to warmer summer months and the opportunities to be outdoors in nature, at gatherings and travel to fun places. Speaking of summer, travel and fun…..I wanted to use this month’s opening message to get everyone excited for the OOMPH Summer Visits!
The OOMPH Summer Visits are a key part of our program and not just because they satisfy the residency requirement for graduation. The visits are also all about community building and fostering connection to your peers, the faculty, OOMPH team and the campus. Being back in person for Summer 2022 after two years with the pandemic was amazing and we were beyond excited to welcome everyone. UC Berkeley is a gorgeous place and we love being able to share it with you while you are here. So many landmarks to explore including:
| |
|
-
Sather Gate – registered historical landmark entryway to Sproul
-
Sproul Plaza – many well-known rallies and protests have taken place here including those on Free speech, Vietnam War and Occupy Berkeley
| |
Whether Summer 2023 is your 1st or 2nd time coming to an OOMPH Visit, we know you will have a wonderful experience. The Program Team and course faculty are busily preparing to have you all here for different interactive discussions, applied learning exercises, professional development, social gatherings and more. We hope that you will immerse in the week and really take advantage of the opportunity to be fully present in the content and networking that will be offered. For more details on the visits, you can visit the webpage on Summer Visits.
Look forward to seeing you all soon!
Warmly,
Kim

Alumni Spotlight
Montserrat (Montse) Ayala-Ramirez (OOMPH graduate 2018) recently published her environmental health research in Environment International, a high impact peer-reviewed journal.
| |
|
Montse first learned about concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) when she was a teaching assistant in PHW200F and she was shocked by the extensive burden of industrial food animal production on the environment and human health. Upon further reading/research and because she was working at that time in the Environmental Polymorphisms Registry at NIEHS, she decided to look for gene-environment interactions using the SNPs database she had access to.
Congratulations Montse!
