December 2022 // A Community Newsletter
Dear friends and neighbors,
In the almost two years that I've been with Goodman, I've learned something incredibly valuable: Even when faced with immense challenges, a group of people can come together to achieve great things.
I saw it in action once again the weekend before Thanksgiving, when Goodman staff, hundreds of volunteers and members of the community came together to supply Thanksgiving groceries to more than 4,000 Dane County families.

  • When the weather forecast for the distribution weekend promised to be frigidly cold, volunteers showed up anyway, dressed in their warmest jackets and snowpants – smiles on their faces.
  • When we put out the call for food on Saturday, Nov. 21, because we were way short of our goal, you turned up on Sunday with cars filled with stuffing and gravy, oil and cranberries, canned fruits and veggies.
  • Local businesses stepped up bigger than they ever have before, providing financial sponsorship, hosting fundraisers and volunteering.
  • So many local schools, organizations and individuals hosted food drives to help us out.
  • And thousands of you made financial gifts that not only funded our Thanksgiving Basket program but will also support the work we're doing all year long.

My favorite quote is, "Be the good you wish to see in the world." The good you wish to see in the world is obvious with every act of kindness you do. Thank you for being a part of our community.
With gratitude,
Letesha Nelson

Volunteer Workshop Opportunity
Goodman volunteers are invited to gather together to learn about ways to support people dealing with mental health issues, and how those issues may be exacerbated by stress and trauma.

Hope Edgren from the Emergency Services Unit of Journey Mental Health Center will lead us with techniques to use, especially when working with program participants we might not be familiar with. We will also explore how we can identify and examine our biases that might pop up in these interactions. There will be time to practice new concepts and to ask questions.

OUR PROGRAMS

Middle School Takes to the Rink
Last week, our LOFT middle schoolers took over the Monona Bank River Rink for an afternoon of ice skating with skills ranging from wobbly beginnings to triple axels. (Okay, maybe not, but they were good skaters!)

Thanks to Monona Parks & Recreation for hosting and sharing the fun photos with us.
A Preschool Party
On the last day of school before Thanksgiving, our preschool Blue House had a Friendsgiving party with pajamas, popcorn and dancing.

Activities like these build a sense of community and belonging among our young learners. This helps create a feeling of safety that fosters positive growth.

And, of course, the kiddos had a blast celebrating and being silly with their friends!
Older Adult Turkey Lunch
Another Thanksgiving lunch is in the books for our Older Adult Program. Last Tuesday, seniors were treated to a delicious meal of mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, apple pie and turkey – including a tofurkey option for our vegetarian participants! It was all prepared by our talented program chefs. There was music and conversation and plenty to be thankful for.

Thank you to our program food team and older adult volunteers for helping make this event memorable!

“Thank you so so much for the Thanksgiving basket. I greatly appreciate everyone who took time to help organize this huge event. It's been so cold, and I cannot say thank you enough for helping our family.”
– Thanksgiving Basket recipient

In the last issue of What's Good at Goodman, we told you "many people doing small acts of kindness add up to making a huge difference," and last week you proved us right. Thank you for stepping up when we – and your community – needed you. We're stronger together than we are apart ❤️
P.S. We have a new and improved online donation system that's incredibly secure, but we are still working out a few functionality kinks. If you make a gift and notice something amiss, please let us know by emailing amie@goodmancenter.org. Thank you!
