Scripture Readings for May 5

Acts 1:1-8
1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

John 1:1-17
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2
He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’” 16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

If you are willing to help someone in this way, please contact Nataliya and she can help arrange a match. Sign Up for Holy Friday Vigil

Again this year, we will be holding a vigil over the Tomb of Christ from Holy Friday afternoon to Holy Saturday morning. During vigil, we read the psalter in the church at the tomb. This practice is rooted in church history - after our Lord died on the Cross, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea took the body of Jesus, bound it in linen cloths with spices and buried it in a new tomb. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sat opposite the tomb watching as their Lord was buried. The Church over the centuries has joined with these two women in keeping watch over Jesus’ tomb. The Holy Friday Vigil at Christ’s tomb is our opportunity to help keep watch over our Lord’s body as He descends into Hell to loosen the bonds of death. What better way to understand the death and resurrection of Jesus than to participate in the Vigil by His tomb?

If you would like to participate, please sign up below.
More Singing from Our Choir

You will enjoy hearing our choir singing Rejoice, O Bethany and the Hymn of Kassiani. Thank you so much to all the members of our choir, to the conductors and the singers, for blessing our Cathedral services with such lovely singing.

Project Mexico Home Building Work Trip

Dear members of the St. Nicholas Community,

We are a team of Orthodox Christians traveling to Tijuana, Mexico to participate in a Home Building Work Trip with Project Mexico & St. Innocent Orphanage. During this trip, our primary goal will be to construct a home for a needy family in Tijuana. We will also have the opportunity to spend time with the local people, sharing our Orthodox faith.

We invite you to join us by praying for the family who will receive the house. Prayers are also requested for all the beneficiaries, staff, and volunteers of Project Mexico; for the orphanage, parish and clergy of St. Innocent; and for our volunteer team in particular.

In addition, please consider supporting our trip financially. The donations we receive will go towards construction materials, transportation costs for our team, and the needs of the Project Mexico program and St. Innocent Orphanage.

Our team members represent four local parishes: St. Mary in Falls Church, St. Katherine in Falls Church, All Saints of America in Alexandria, and St. Nicholas in D.C. The team will leave for Mexico on August 6th.

For questions about the mission, you may contact James Nicholson.
Gift Corner News
Please Consider Joining Our Gift Corner Ministry

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are reaching out to let you know that the Gift Corner team is very much in need of some extra help! We do find ourselves needing to expand the team so that we can have coverage every Sunday of the year without putting undue burden on the Stowells, who have staffed it for two years.

The Gift Corner volunteers will serve for approximately 1 hour after each Divine Liturgy, and periodically for other services as well. Serve monthly or as available.

The Gift Corner offers an unparalleled opportunity to serve our Cathedral and to have fun at the same time. It allows for fellowship with parishioners and with visitors from other churches and even from other states! It is an important source of revenue for the Cathedral, and one which has been available for many years, and which people have grown to expect and look to for purchases of icons, crosses, books, jewelry, and much more.

The more volunteers we have, the greater the chance of having coverage for every Sunday without putting too much pressure on any one volunteer, and without having to close down the Gift Corner if the Stowells are unavailable.

Whether you are new to the Cathedral or just looking for a new way to serve, we would really appreciate it if you would be willing to try volunteering for this worthy ministry.

If you would like more information, or are willing to join us, please contact Victoria Stowell at (719) 651-3636 or James Stowell at (803) 207-1863.
Young Adults News
Our Active Young Adults

The St. Nicholas Cathedral’s Young Adults group has several new projects underway.
On the third Saturday of every month, the group buys food and supplies, and cooks 60 or more hot meals to distribute that afternoon to homeless persons in Washington, D.C. St. Stephen’s Table is a joint project with the Young Adult League at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral and Ss. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church. Donations to this terrific charitable project are welcome. (Donations can be made to St. Nicholas Cathedral and will be credited to the Young Adult program. If donating online, please indicate "Young Adult" in the memo line.)
Preparing and packaging hot meals to feed the homeless of our city is a beautiful way to share the love of Christ.
Also at St. Nicholas, Nadia Swit organized a meeting of young Orthodox women who met for food and conversation while making bookmarks. Future events will include crafting, outdoor activities and movies; young women from area Orthodox churches are welcome.
Crafting and fellowship are a wonderful combination - these young women have made some truly beautiful bookmarks!
The Young Adult group at St. Nicholas, under the guidance of Fr. George, has been very active for nearly two years, meeting monthly after Liturgy to discuss spiritual and other issues and meeting with Metropolitan Tikhon and Orthodox leaders. They provide coffee hour after Sunday Liturgy once a month, bake prosphora, organize outings and support the Ukraine relief by sorting goods, loading boxes and packing trucks for shipment. Metropolitan Tikhon has called the group a model for the Orthodox Church in America. Any young adult interested in joining can contact Will Baumgardner.
