WINNERS SELECTED IN OUR 70TH ANNIVERSARY CONTEST
Special Tours, Events and Contests Coming in 2023
Our year-long 70th anniversary celebration of the SS United States’ triumphant maiden voyage has been inspiring and energizing. We’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from people of all ages and from every corner of the globe.

For our "70th Anniversary Writing Contest" we received over fifty moving submissions, including tributes from people with personal connections to the vessel during her service career as well as from those who have only interacted with the ship since her retirement. We were deeply touched by the submissions and by how so many people remain captivated by the SS United States.

We are pleased to announce that we have selected two winners - Angela Harrison Eng and Julian Sukel.

Angela, who first saw the Big U at her berth in Norfolk following the ship being pulled from service, wrote in part, "As a kid, I felt that the giant, beautiful ship was a mystery. I’d asked my dad about it, but he said it was a retired passenger liner—nothing terribly mysterious. Yet every time we passed the ship on the way somewhere else, I wanted nothing more than to see what was inside. I wanted to touch and explore it. There was something about a locked up, abandoned ship that put my imagination into overdrive."

Julian struck on his passion for ocean liners, which he regularly shares on his Instagram account, saying, "The United States still has many forgotten stories to tell, and that’s why she desperately needs to be saved...even in her empty condition, she is still full of the life and memories of her decades past at sea. The “Big U” is a survivor, and I hope someday she’ll be restored to her former glory so that people will be able to experience her marvelous history."

We were energized and inspired by the number of eloquent submissions from former passengers, including some who immigrated to America aboard the SS United States, as well as from family members of former passengers and crew members. To celebrate these unique connections to our flagship, we will be planning a special ship visit and event in the spring. We will be sharing further details on this plans in the coming weeks.

In the coming months, we will also be announcing a second creative writing contest that will give supporters another opportunity to share their reflections on the SS United States. (All current submissions will be automatically entered into our next contest.) Stay tuned for more details.
EXPLORE THE LIVES AND CAREERS OF TWO EXTRAORDINARY AMERICANS - WILLIAM FRANCIS GIBBS & WALT DISNEY

Tune In For Our Virtual Event "William and Walt: Dreamers and Doers"
Visionary maritime architect William Francis Gibbs and legendary animator Walt Disney shared a similar drive, passion and ambition. These attributes guided each man's journey to the pinnacle of their respective industries.

Developed by Conservancy Florida Chapter Chair Conor Finnegan, this enthralling program chronicles and compares the lives and accomplishments of two iconic Americans. Earlier this year, Conor delivered his presentation aboard the Conservancy's Legacy Cruise (pictured here). Now we're excited to offer this insightful and engaging presentation as a FREE virtual event for our supporters.

This Sunday, December 4, at 5:00pm ET, the Conservancy will host "William and Walt: Dreamers and Doers." The virtual event will feature Conor's presentation, and include a conversation between Conor and Conservancy President Susan Gibbs, the granddaughter of the ship's designer.
MORE FROM THE SS UNITED STATES CONSERVANCY
Renowned maritime artist Robert G. Lloyd recently listed his original "Out of the Mist" painting for sale. The estimated market value for this extraordinary piece is $5,200. This oil on canvas painting measures 22 x 16.5 inches and Robert has very generously offered 25% of proceeds from the sale of the painting to the SS United States Conservancy.

The stunning, original artwork is the basis for his highly popular "Out of the Mist" prints that depict the SS United States departing New York on a misty winter day. These prints are also available for sale. Please visit Robert’s website where you can find other signed and numbered fine art limited-edition prints featuring the SS United States.

The Conservancy would like to thank the members of Norwich Power Squadron, a chapter of United States Power Squadrons, for their recent generous donation in support of our work to save the SS United States.

Following the Squadron's recent Chapter meeting that featured a presentation by Conservancy President Susan Gibbs about the history of America's Flagship and the efforts to save the vessel, members were inspired to join our cause. One member even had a special connection to the United States - more about that to come in a future e-update.

THE BIG U CONTINUES TO INSPIRE...

"...It somehow brings me closer to the ship—one that was decommissioned before I was born yet remains in my imagination as a monument to a time I’d never know. I’m just short of 42 now, and one of my biggest wishes is to see the ship be a monument just for me, but for everyone like me—those who want to see and experience the ship’s glory days through living history." - Angela Harrison Eng
