"a beacon for good in the world"

Friends,

“Casting Out Demons” is the sermon for this fifth Sunday after Epiphany, which is also Communion Sunday. The lections are the Prophecy of Isaiah 40:21-31 about waiting on the goodness of the Lord, and the Gospel of Mark 1:29-39 about Jesus’ healing the sick. Our worship leader is Val Baumann.

By now, we understand that the Evangelist Mark likes a good story, a good narrative, and especially ones about healing. So, think about which demons we need to cast out in our own individual and corporate lives in order to begin to be healed.

With Epiphany good wishes,

Pastor Dianne

Music Notes

This week I would like to provide information about a different part of the worship service.  Every week following the Lord’s Prayer, we sing the Gloria Patri.  In some traditions it is called the ‘Lesser Doxology’.  This integral part of our Sunday service was written in 1851 by Henry Greatorex (1816-1858).  His father, Thomas Greatorex (1758-1831), was a longtime organist at the famed Westminster Abbey in London.  Henry emigrated to the United States in 1839.  He eventually became organist at Calvary Episcopal Church in Manhattan.  Greatorex was instrumental in raising the standard of church music in America.  In 1851 he published a Collection of Psalm and Hymn Tunes, Chants, Anthems, and Sentences.

Calvary Episcopal Church is still a center for exceptional church music to this day.  Remarkably, the organ on which Greatorex composed the Gloria Patri still exists, largely unaltered, in the Round Lake Auditorium in Round Lake, NY.  It was moved there in 1888.  During my years at the Andover Organ Company, I have spent many days helping to maintain this exceptional instrument over the years. In 2016, the U.S. Department of the interior designated this pipe organ, built in 1847, a National Historic Landmark.  This is the only musical instrument to receive this distinction.

Visitation Ministry

We are very fortunate to have a volunteer Visitation Ministry Team composed of six of our church members. They work together to keep in touch with individuals who are unable to attend church for various reasons.

They visit members in their homes, independent and assisted living facilities and/or nursing homes. They also make phone calls - to check in on individual needs or just to chat. Your lay Visitation Ministry Team supports but does not replace visits and calls from our Pastor.

If you would like to be called or visited, or know of someone in the congregation who needs a friendly visit or a listening ear, please contact Pastor Dianne or Ellie Reinhardt, Chair (efreinhardt@gmail.com).

Plymouth No Place for Hate

The Plymouth No Place for Hate Committee would like to thank the Church of the Pilgrimage for their support and generous donations made to further their work. The MLK service on Jan. 14 was amazing and bodes well for future community gatherings where we recognize diversity in our community and the strength we can gain from inclusion for all. Thank you.
