One of my first official duties as senior warden was to report—in this space—on the April vestry meeting…and to make it interesting! Did I draw the short straw? Not at all. We don’t really have to be church nerds to find the work of the vestry interesting; we simply need to be interested in the work of the church. My goal will be to preserve the luster of the vestry’s work in my reporting; please let me know how I do!
Is it coincidental that we welcome new vestry members right in the midst of spring? New growth and new faces remind us that vitality and change go hand in hand. Ever grateful for the service of our outgoing vestry members, we gathered for Monday’s meeting, and the new faces of Kathleen Chandler, Patsy Davis, Melissa Friedman, and Stacy Nuessle glowed with fresh enthusiasm.
After praying Evening Prayer together, your vestry approved minutes from the previous meeting. (Admittedly, approving minutes isn’t that interesting, but it’s important.) We received updates on prior business and discussed upcoming events. And here’s where it gets interesting! Fr. Eric offered a bit of Vestry 101 for the sake of new and returning vestry members. He explained that a vestry differs from most governing boards in that our work is effected by prayer and relationship, in addition to rational decision-making. He reminded us that the rector and the vestry both have responsibility for the material and spiritual needs of the parish, though the emphasis is different. And then Fr. Eric gave a rundown on the governance of Saint Paul’s, from the canons of the Episcopal Church, through our Colonial charter, the diocesan canons, Saint Paul’s bylaws, and our vestry’s covenant and norms. The covenant and norms are most pertinent in our usual comings and goings; they spell out our commitment to conduct effective meetings and to engage in compelling lay leadership.
I'll look forward to reporting on each of our monthly meetings, and I hope you’ll look forward to reading them.
Kitty Gordon
Senior Warden

The Sunday Forum New Series:
Being Salt and Light
Beginning Sunday, April 21
Mother Kimberly leads a new series in our Sunday Forum beginning April 21, 9:30 AM. What do the Holy Scriptures tell us about being salt and light? How can Christians add “seasoning” to a world that seems to already have its own flavor? How can Christians illuminate spaces that seem to embrace the status quo? How can a simple conversation and a way of being become a spark that ignites a positive exchange and leaves people wanting more? Let us walk together, share stories, and discover how our daily living can become liberating ways that will leave people wanting more.

Caregivers’ support group will meet Thursday, April 25, 3:30 PM in the chapel. Support the Women Spring Drive
Through April 30
The annual Saint Paul’s Bra Drive sponsored by the St. Ruth Byllesby Chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King has evolved into the Support Augusta Women and Girls Personal Clothing Drive. The DOK is expanding our connections with local shelters to provide personal apparel and hygiene items. This is a significant need for all local shelters in the Augusta Area and Saint Paul’s is the only entity providing these items to all these shelters. From March 17th until the end of April, we will have our turquoise and white flowered boxes in Tyler Hall and the Narthex. We will collect gently used bras; new bras and underwear; and feminine menstrual products for the following agencies: Children Protective Services, Hope House, I-Care, Safe Homes, and Salvation Army Shelters. Other Resources and Announcements
Saint Paul’s now owns two cemetery plots in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens that were donated by families who made other arrangements for the burial of their loved ones. Hillcrest Memorial Gardens is located off Deans Bridge Rd, where it intersects with Richmond Hill Road, just off the Gordon Highway (the old Regency Mall area). These families had historical connections to Saint Paul’s and as they determined they no longer needed the plot(s) they had previously purchased, they generously donated these plots to the Church. Per the wishes of the donors, these plots are available to members of Saint Paul’s at no cost, and they are offered on a first come-first serve basis. Any costs associated with the cemetery or with a service would be the responsibility of the new owner of the cemetery plot. Elisabeth Price has the ownership documents with detail on the respective locations in the church office if anyone is interested.
