"Envisioning Bold Possibilities"
CSSA's Podcast, "Living the Mission,"
is Back for the Spring!
|
|
Delaney Burns '21 and Caroline Maltese '21 return this semester to bring you Season 2 of Living the Mission! This semester Delaney and Caroline will focus on roles we each play in pursuing equity and justice in the Social Change Ecosystem. They hope that in the season of life and in this season of the podcast you can identify where your strengths lie according to these roles and where you may have some room to grow.
In this episode, they focus on what it means to be visionary as they imagine bold possibilities and dream big for the direction of the podcast, directing their efforts towards social change. They would like to thank you all from the bottom of their hearts for being a part of this journey and can’t wait to see how we can continue to Live the Mission.

Our #MyMagisMessage for the week comes from Sarah Brown, a sophomore Political Science and Peace, Justice, and Human Rights major and Spanish minor from Albuquerque, New Mexico! Sarah has served with the Fatima Family Center, Esperanza ESL, Thomas Jefferson Newcomers Academy, and Building Hope in the City.
If you had to state your life mission off the top of your head, in one sentence, what would it be?
“Seek to be an oasis of caring and concern as you live your life.” - The Dalai Lama
#MyMagisMessage
When I tell people I’m from Albuquerque, New Mexico I am always faced with looks of shock and wonder. The inevitable question asked after this fun fact about me is always “Why John Carroll?” but for me the choice was easy after visiting campus. Not only did I immediately fall in love with the beautiful campus and the welcoming environment, but I also fell in love with John Carroll’s devotion to social justice and service.
It is hard to put into words how much I love service and how much purpose it gives me. John Carroll gives me this chance to encounter people from all walks of life and it’s truly what makes this school special. From helping kids with their homework to teaching ESL, I have had the opportunity to meet many amazing people who have taught me so much. Though it’s nothing like the in-person experience, my virtual service is still something I look forward to every week.
If you had asked me for almost all of high school what I wanted to go to college for, I would've answered with "Aerospace Engineering". Looking at my majors now it is difficult to see how I made that complete 180 turn, but ultimately it was because of one thing: service. I had an internship the summer before my senior year where I was working on the Air Force Base with a solar telescope. Everyday I was confronted with the question of "What is the point of this?” and I constantly asked myself how this was helping those around me, yet I still believed that this was the right path for me.
It wasn’t until a service experience that truly changed my mind. Since Albuquerque is only a several hours from the US-Mexico border, the building next door to school would occasionally house immigrants in transit. Since I was taking AP Spanish, I was asked to go and hang out with the kids there after school one day while the parents were filling out paperwork for their legal status. I remember looking at these kids and realizing how strong they were as they had just made the impossible journey across the desert, some going days without food and water in the horrible heat. Yet, once I picked up a soccer ball to play with them they were all instantly excited and all their troubles seemed to wash away. I will never forget the parents’ look of joy when they saw all their kids outside having fun, playing around like kids are supposed to. I realized in that moment that I couldn’t spend my life looking at the stars when there were so many shining people around me that society refuses to acknowledge.
