1. THE ENTRY INTO THE TEMPLE OF THE MOST-HOLY THEOTOKOS

When the Most-holy Virgin Mary reached the age of three, her holy parents Joachim and Anna took her from Nazareth to Jerusalem to dedicate her to the service of God according to their earlier promise. It was a three-day journey from Nazareth to Jerusalem but, traveling to do a God-pleasing work, this journey was not difficult for them. Many kinsmen of Joachim and Anna gathered in Jerusalem to take part in this event, at which the invisible angels of God were also present. Leading the procession into the Temple were virgins with lighted tapers in their hands, then the Most-holy Virgin, led on one side by her father and on the other side by her mother. The virgin was clad in vesture of royal magnificence and adornments as was befitting the "King's daughter, the Bride of God" (Psalm 45:13-15). Following them were many kinsmen and friends, all with lighted tapers. Fifteen steps led up to the Temple. Joachim and Anna lifted the Virgin onto the first step, then she ran quickly to the top herself, where she was met by the High Priest Zacharias, who was to be the father of St. John the Forerunner. Taking her by the hand, he led her not only into the Temple, but into the "Holy of Holies," the holiest of holy places, into which no one but the high priest ever entered, and only once each year, at that. St. Theophylact of Ohrid says that Zacharias "was outside himself and possessed by God" when he led the Virgin into the holiest place in the Temple, beyond the second curtain--otherwise, his action could not be explained. Mary's parents then offered sacrifice to God according to the Law, received the priest's blessing and returned home. The Most-holy Virgin remained in the Temple and dwelt there for nine full years. While her parents were alive, they visited her often, especially Righteous Anna. When God called her parents from this world, the Most-holy Virgin was left an orphan and did not wish to leave the Temple until death or to enter into marriage. As that would have been against the Law and custom of Israel, she was given to St. Joseph, her kinsman in Nazareth, after reaching the age of twelve. Under the acceptable role of one betrothed, she could live in virginity and thus fulfill her desire and formally satisfy the Law, for it was then unknown in Israel for maidens to vow virginity to the end of their lives. The Most-holy Virgin Mary was the first of such life-vowed virgins, of the thousands and thousands of virgin men and women who would follow her in the Church of Christ.

The parents of the Holy Virgin

Lead her to the holy Temple,

And according to their promise

They give her to the Lord.

They lead the Temple to the Temple,

While angels chant,

And chant with joy

To the young Virgin in purest attire.

The virgins accompany our Virgin, 

With hymns and tapers;

Zacharias leads her

To the Holy of Holies;

And into the Holy Place he takes her,

Where the awesome mystery is hidden.

Where the Ark of the Covenant is,

Where the golden lampstand is,

Where the staff and the manna are,

Into the guarding place of all mysteries;

There the pure Virgin is led--

The Mystical Ark of the Living Christ.

REFLECTION

Submit yourself to the will of God and do not pry too closely into God's judgments, for you can lose your mind. The judgments of God are innumerable and unfathomable. A monk in the wilderness, imagining that he had attained perfection, prayed to God that He would reveal to him His various judgments in the lives of men. God put the thought in his mind to go to a distant place to inquire of a spiritual elder concerning this. However, while the monk was on his way, an angel of God in the form of an ordinary man joined him, saying that he too wanted to go to that elder. Thus traveling together, they came upon the house of a God-fearing man, who treated them well, giving them to eat from a silver platter. When they had eaten, the angel took the platter and threw it into the sea. The monk found this both amazing and unjust, but he remained silent. The second day they came upon the house of another hospitable man who cordially received and treated them as kinsmen. Before leaving, that man brought out his only son for the travelers to bless. The angel of God then took the child by the throat and strangled him. The monk was greatly angered and asked the angel who he was, and why he had committed such misdeeds. The angel meekly replied to him: "The first man was pleasing to God in all things and had nothing in his house that was attained by injustice except that silver platter. By God's judgment, I threw that stolen platter away, so that the man would be righteous before God in all things. The other man was pleasing to God and had nothing in his house that would bring down the wrath of God except his son, who--had he matured--would have become a great criminal and a demonic vessel. Therefore, by God's judgment, I strangled that child in time to save his soul, for the sake of his father's goodness, and to save the father from many miseries. Behold, such are the mysteries and the unfathomable judgments of God. And you, elder, should return to your cell and not strive vainly by inquiring into that which is in the authority of the One God."

CONTEMPLATION

Contemplate the wondrous creation of the world (Genesis 2):

1. How God created man from the dust of the earth;

2. How He breathed the spirit of life into his nostrils;

3. How man became a living soul.

HOMILY

on the faithful as one body and one spirit

…There is one body and one spirit (Ephesians 4:4).

The Holy Apostle counsels the faithful to strive to be one body and one spirit. By one body is understood "one Faith," without divisions, without heresies and without self-will: the whole Church is one body of which Christ is the Head. By one spirit is understood "love," the ardent love of all the faithful for Christ, from which proceeds mutual love. The many become as one; many men become as one man. This is the miracle of the Christian Faith and Christian love. There is no power in the world which can be a stronger bond among men: not the same blood, or the same language, or the same hearth, or the same parents, or any type of common material interests. None of these is even nearly as powerful a bond as Christian faith and love. By this powerful, irresistible bond, all the members of the Church are bound to each other. The Church of God stands as one man, in time and in eternity--one body and one spirit. There is nothing more contradictory to this wondrous unity than the pride of individual men. Pride distorts faith, cools love, creates heresies, divides the Church, and sacrifices the good of the whole for individual satisfaction. Pride, in essence, is the absence of both faith and love. Brethren, may God save us from pride, the primal infirmity of the human race, that we may always be one body and one spirit in our Lord Jesus Christ.

To Thee, O Lord Jesus; to Thee, the Head of the Church, be glory and praise forever. Amen.

Житије светих из Пролога Св. Николаја Велимировића

РОДИТЕЉИ СВЕТУ ДЕВУ У ХРАМ СВЕТИ УВОЂАХУ, И ПО СВОМЕ ОБЕЋАЊУ ГОСПОДУ ЈЕ ПРЕДАВАХУ. Када се Пресветој Деви Марији навршише три године од рођења, доведоше је родитељи њени свети, Јоаким и Ана, из Назарета у Јерусалим, да је предаду Богу на службу према ранијем обећању своме. Три дана пута има од Назарета до Јерусалима; но идући на богоугодно дело тај пут не беше им тежак.

 Сабраше се и многи сродници Јоакимови и Анини, да узму учешћа у овој светковини, у којој узимаху учешћа невидљиво и ангели Божји. Напред иђаху девице са запаљеним свећама у рукама, па онда Пресвета Дева, вођена с једне стране оцем својим а с друге мајком. Беше Дева украшена царским благољепним одећама и украсима, како и приличи кћери царевој, невести Божјој. За њима последоваше множина сродника и пријатеља, сви са запаљеним свећама. Пред храмом беше 15 степена. Родитељи дигоше Деву на први степен, а она онда сама брзо узиђе до врха, где је срете првосвештеник Захарија, отац св. Јована Претече, и узевши је за руку уведе је не само у храм него у Святая святыхъ у Светињу над Светињама, у коју нико никада не улажаше осим архијереја, и то једанпут годишње. Св. Теофилакт Охридски вели, да је Захарија „ван себе био и Богом обузет” када је Деву уводио у најсветије место храма, иза друге завесе, иначе се не би могао овај поступак његов објаснити. Тада родитељи принесоше жртву Богу, према закону, примише благослов од свештеника, и вратише се дома, а Пресвета Дева оста при храму. И пребиваше она при храму пуних 9 година. Док јој беху родитељи живи посећиваху је често, а нарочито блажена Ана. Када пак родитељи њени беху Богом одазвани из овога света, Пресвета Дева оста као сироче, и не жељаше никако до смрти удаљавати се из храма нити ступати у брак. Како то беше противно и закону и обичају у Израиљу, то она по навршетку 12 година би дата св. Јосифу, сроднику своме у Назарет, да под видом обручнице живи у девствености, те тако и да своју жељу испуни и привидно закон задовољи. Јер у то време не знаде се у Израиљу за девојке завештане на девство до краја живота. Пресвета Дева Марија беше прва таква доживотно завештана девојка, и њој после следоваху у цркви Христовој хиљаде и хиљаде девственица и девственика.

 Тропар (глас 4):

Днес благоволенија Божија предображеније и человјеков спасенија проповједаније в храмје Божији јасно Дјева јављајетсја, и Христа всјем предвозвјешчајет: тој и ми велегласно возопијим: радујсја, смотренија зиждитељева исполњеније.

Родитељи Свету Деву

У храм свети увођаху,

И по своме обећању

Господу је предаваху:

Храм се у храм увођаше,

Док ангели запојаше,

Запојаше у милини

Малој Деви у белини.

Нашу Деву деве прате

Са химнама и свећама,

Захарија приводи је

Светињи над Светињама;

У светињу уводи је

Где се страшна тајна крије

Где је ћивот од завета,

Где је златна кадилница,

Где је жезал и где мана,

Где свих тајни сакривница —

Ту се води Дева чиста,

Тајни ћивот живог Христа.

РАСУЂИВАЊЕ

    Покори се вољи Божјој и не испитуј сувише судове Божје, јер можеш с ума сићи. Јер су судови Божји безбројни и недокучни. Неки монах у пустињи мислећи за себе да је достигао савршенство мољаше се Богу још, да му Бог открије Своје различне судове у животу људском. И Бог му стави помисао у ум, да иде на далеко некоме старцу духовнику, и пита о томе. Када пак монах беше на путу придружи му се ангел Божји у виду обична човека и рече му да и он хоће к ономе старцу. Путујући тако заједно падоше на конак код некога богољубива човека, који их добро угости давши им да једу из сребрног тањира. Када једоше, ангел узе тањир и баци га у море. Монаху то беше и чудно и криво, но ћуташе. Други дан падоше на конак опет код некога човека гостољубца, који их усрдно прими и својски почасти. При поласку изведе тај човек сина свога јединца, да га путници благослове. А ангел Божји узе дете за гушу и удави. Ражљути се монах и упита ангела, ко је он и зашто таква недела чини? Одговори му ангел кротко: онај први човек у свему је Богу угодан, и ништа нема у дому његову што је неправдом стечено осим оног сребрног тањира. По Божјем суду ја бацих онај украђени тањир, да би човек онај био у свему прав пред Богом. И онај други муж је Богу угодан, и нема ништа у дому његову што би навлачило гнев Божји осим сина му, који би, ако би одрастао, био велики злотвор и сасуд демонски. Зато по Божјем суду удавих то дете, да му душу спасем за времена због доброте очеве, а и оца да сачувам од беде многе. Ето то су и такви су тајанствени и недокучни судови Божји. А ти, старче, иди у своју келију и немој се трудити улудо испитујући оно што је у власти јединога Бога.

СОЗЕРЦАЊЕ

Да созерцавам чудесно стварање света, и то:

1. како створи Бог човека од праха земнога;

2. како му дуну у нос дух животни;

3. како поста човек душа жива.



БЕСЕДА

о вернима као једном телу и једном духу

Једно тијело, један дух (Еф. 4, 4).

    Да се старају верни, да буду једно тијело и један дух; то препоручује свети апостол. Под једним телом разуме се једна вера, без цепања, без јереси, без самовоље: цела црква је једно тело, коме је глава Христос. Под једним духом разуме се љубав, љубав пламена свих верних према Христу, од кога произлази и узајамна љубав. Множина да буде као једнина; много људи као један човек. То је чудо хришћанске вере и хришћанске љубави. Нема те силе у свету, која може бити јачом споном међу људима. Ни иста крв, ни исти језик, ни исто огњиште, ни исти родитељи, нити ма какви материјални интереси – ништа од тога није ни издалека онаква силна спона као вера и љубав хришћанска. Том силном и неодољивом споном повезани су сви чланови цркве међу собом. И црква Божја стоји као један човек, у времену и у вечности – Једно тијело, један дух. Овоме чудесном јединству ништа тако не противречи као гордост појединих људи. Гордост криви веру, хладни љубав; гордост ствара јереси, цепа цркву, жртвује добро целине угодности личној. Гордост је у суштини одсуство и вере и љубави. Нека нас Бог, браћо, сачува од гордости, праисконог недуга рода људског. Да би били вазда једно тијело и један дух у Господу нашем Исусу Христу. Теби Господе Исусе, Теби Главо Цркве, Теби слава и хвала вавек. Амин.

Below please find two links. One to the poems for the St. Sava celebration as well as a link to the sign-up sheet. The St. Sava Day program will be celebrated on Sunday, January 22, 2023, following the Liturgy and luncheon.

Please sign up by December 15 to be included in the official program. This is open to all children. Please add your child's name and age when signing up for a poem.

A rehearsal will be scheduled in January and the date will be shared soon.

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” So he answered and said, “’You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!” But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Рече му пак: Право си одговорио; то чини и бићеш жив. А он хтеде да се оправда, па рече Исусу: А ко је ближњи мој? А Исус одговарајући рече: Један човек силажаше из Јерусалима у Јерихон, па га ухватише хајдуци, који га свукоше и изранише, па отидоше, оставивши га пола мртва. А изненада силажаше оним путем некакав свештеник, и видевши га прође. А тако и Левит кад је био на ономе месту, приступи, и видевши га прође. А Самарјанин некакав пролазећи дође над њега, и видевши га сажали му се; И приступивши зави му ране и зали уљем и вином; и посадивши га на своје кљусе доведе у гостионицу, и устаде око њега. И сутрадан полазећи извади два гроша те даде крчмару, и рече му: Гледај га, и шта више потрошиш ја ћу ти платити кад се вратим. Шта мислиш, дакле, који је од оне тројице био ближњи ономе што су га били ухватили хајдуци? А он рече: Онај који се смиловао на њега. А Исус му рече: Иди, и ти чини тако.

А кад иђаху путем и Он уђе у једно село, а жена нека, по имену Марта, прими Га у своју кућу. И у ње беше сестра, по имену Марија, која и седе код ногу Исусових и слушаше беседу Његову. А Марта се беше забунила како ће Га дочекати, и прикучивши се рече: Господе! Зар Ти не мариш што ме сестра моја остави саму да служим? Реци јој, дакле, да ми помогне. А Исус одговарајући рече јој: Марта! Марта! Бринеш се и трудиш за много, А само је једно потребно. Али је Марија добри део изабрала, који се неће узети од ње.

А кад то говораше, подиже глас једна жена из народа и рече Му: Благо утроби која те је носила, и сисама које си сао! А Он рече: Благо и онима који слушају реч Божију, и држе је.
