Retired Pilot Dell Fuller Finds New Purpose With Hope Alliance

An out-of-the-blue invitation nearly 15 years ago changed the course of Dell Fuller’s life. Would he be interested in joining an expedition to Guatemala to offer vision care to a small, underserved community? Fuller was retired from his career as an airline pilot, and though he didn’t know much about Hope Alliance, he was looking for a new purpose in life, and he accepted.

Keep the germs away!

Always wash your hands before putting them close to your eyes, especially if you’re putting in or taking out contact lenses.

Give your eyes a break

Do you spend a lot of time looking at a computer, phone, or TV screen? Staring at any one thing for too long can tire your eyes. Give your eyes a rest with the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Hope Alliance Heads to Tanzania in 2024

We're excited to announce that this year for the very first time, Hope Alliance will be hosting a Vision Expedition to Tanzania from October 31st to November 13th!

Glasses Can Be a Boon to Income

“Glasses aren’t just good for your eyes. They can be a boon to income, too”, Gabrielle Emanuel wrote in a recent NPR report on how giving people a simple pair of eyeglasses has proven to increase their income enormously. This message rings true for those of us who know Hope Alliance well as they’ve been saying this for nearly 25 years.

Hope Alliance’s core mission is to provide vision care and eyeglasses to a population of people who may not even know they can’t see clearly. Once Hope Alliance provides them with the chance to improve their vision, this opens up an entirely new world for them.

Tusiimegye Justus was awarded a scholarship through Hope Alliance and Optometry Giving Sight to further his education as a future ophthalmic assistant. He wrote this letter to express his gratitude:

I am writing this letter to convey my honest and genuine gratitude and appreciation to you for sponsoring my studies at Ruharo Mission Eye Centre for three months. Your scholarship is priceless and will definitely help me in my educational endeavors. I was more than excited to hear of my selection for this privilege and I am profoundly thankful for your help.

Becoming an ophthalmic assistant has always been my dream in life. This financial assistance has made it much easier for me to spend more time on my studies, and it has put me on a path to greatness.

So far I am almost finished with a two month training at Ruharo Mission Eye Centre. Within these two months I have been able to obtain the knowledge of eye anatomy and physiology.

I know that without your help and support, I would not have gone this very far.

Thank you once again for your bounteousness and assistance. I guarantee you that I will make use of this opportunity to study really hard and to win a successful job. Your kind favor also motivates me to help others in need and will definitely do so in future.

Sincerely,

Tusiimegye Justus

May is Healthy Vision Month

Taking care of your eyes can be a priority just like eating healthy and physical activity. Healthy vision can help keep you safe each day. To keep your eyes healthy, get a comprehensive dilated eye exam: an eye care professional will use drops to widen the pupils to check for common vision problems and eye diseases. It’s the best way to find out if you need glasses or contacts, or are in the early stages of any eye-related diseases.
