Foundation’s Impact to Grow
as Endowment Tops $1 Million
The endowment of the Coral Gables Community Foundation reached a major milestone this Spring as its own endowment fund surpassed $1 million. A growing and healthy endowment ensures the sustainability of the Foundation, and it increases the generosity of its grantmaking and community support in perpetuity.
NEW FUND ESTABLISHED
Foundation Welcomes the McCarthy Family Fund
Michael and Rene McCarthy with their family.
Michael and Rene McCarthy have established a Donor Advised Fund to benefit the charitable causes they care most about. The McCarthys are raising their three girls in the Gables and love everything the City has to offer their young family. Michael is a Vice President at Royal Caribbean and serves on the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Co-Chairs the Foundation's Community Giving Committee.

The Foundation administers Donor Advised Funds for local families and individuals who use the Coral Gables Community Foundation to manage the investment and distribution of their charitable giving.

Donors have the ability to request disbursements over time from their Fund to their favorite causes and charities, while the Foundation provides maximum tax advantages and handles all of the back end and administrative support. Donor Advised Funds are like having your own private foundation without the burden and expense of incorporation and administration.

GRANTEE SPOTLIGHT
As rainy days come to Coral Gables, hold back on fertilizer in your garden!

Fertilizer Awareness Week Begins May 9th in Miami-Dade
Miami Waterkeeper, a Coral Gables based non-profit, works to ensure swimmable, drinkable and fishable water for all including our City's beloved waterways and canals. Residents care passionately about the environment and water quality in the Coral Gables Waterway and Biscayne Bay.

Currently the organization is preparing for a fertilizer-free summer. Last Spring, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners enacted an ordinance that prohibits the use of fertilizer during the rainy season (May 15-October 31). During these months, it rains so much that our plants and lawns don't have time to absorb the nutrients in fertilizer before they get washed away -- so we end up fertilizing the algae in our waterways instead of our lawns. Follow Miami Waterkeeper on InstagramFacebook, and Twitter before Fertilizer Awareness Week starts on May 9 for more information.
COMMEMORATIVE BENCH PROGRAM
Pictured above are Sallie Quillian’s husband of 62 years, Dr. Warren Quillian (with scissors); four children: Rutledge, Ruth (Mark), Warren (Heather), and Frances (Joe); and grandchildren.
Quillian Family celebrates the contributions of their wife and mother with reading bench at GW Carver Elementary
QUILLIAN FAMILY MEMBERS from around the country gathered recently at GW Carver Elementary School to dedicate a new reading bench in memory of Sallie Quillian, a long-time Miamian and Gables High School alumna. The Coral Gables Community Foundation was honored to facilitate this process through our Commemorative Bench Program.

Sallie and her family embraced the ideal of an equal educational system. She and several mothers started an After School House at Carver Elementary where children came in the afternoon to play, get help with homework and enjoy a snack. The program helped instill confidence and stability in the lives of many children during that time. Today, the School House is used for pre-kindergarten and we're told they LOVE the new reading spot already.
COMMUNITY SURVEY
Asking for Your Two Cents

We want to hear from YOU, our stakeholders and residents on what you feel are the greatest needs in our community.
As a Community Foundation, we exist first and foremost to meet the needs of our community. Thanks to our donors, Fund Holders, Merrick Society Members and our Board of Directors – we have been empowered to enhance the quality of life for those who live, work, learn and play in Coral Gables.

Coming off of our most successful year in 2021, we find ourselves at a pivotal point of growth. We're embarking on a strategic planning process with a Community Survey as a starting point. As we begin our 31st year in the City Beautiful, we want to hear from YOU!

Our ask of YOU is to take 5 minutes to complete this survey so we can better understand what matters most to YOU.

We cannot predict what our community needs will be in 30 years, but with your participation and support, we know the Coral Gables Community Foundation will be here and will be led by volunteers and staff who have the community's best interests at heart.

Friends of Gables High Expands Investment
with Endowed Fund at Community Foundation
A recognized powerhouse as an alumni association, the Friends of Gables High have invested with Coral Gables Community Foundation to launch the Friends of Gables High Endowment, which will support the charitable endeavors of that organization.

An endowment is money set aside with the goal of earning investment revenue that can fund future charitable activities. That way, it can grow in value and continue to do good in perpetuity.
