Get ready for January

We have so many great opportunities starting in January that you could benefit from and win significant prizes:

Social Innovation Summit: We want your research to benefit your communities. This summit hopes to support the development of proposals and to build connections between your research and the nonprofit and voluntary sector. If you think your research can have an impact on society, discuss this summit with your supervisor.

Kickstart is Back : If you have a start-up idea and would like mentorship to turn that idea into a reality, apply for the Kickstart program. We are opening up to topic areas to include all start-up ideas. Six student groups get mentored so start writing your pitch.

3MT: The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a national competition where you translate your research for a general audience. There is training, mentorship and cash prizes available. The U of R sends our winner to the Western Regionals for the chance to participate in the national competition.

École Polytechnique Vigil

The University of Regina's Women's Centre is holding a short vigil at noon on December 6 in the Crush space in the Riddell. This is in memory of the École Polytechnique massacre. On December 6, 1989 Marc Lépine entered an engineering class at École Polytechnique and murdered 14 women with a semi-automatic rifle. The fourteen women were Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte, and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.

Did you know that the U of R is a member of the Scarborough Charter?

In 2021, the University of Regina joined more than 40 other universities and colleges from across Canada to sign the Scarborough Charter on anti-Black racism and Black inclusion in Canadian Higher Education.

“This Charter is congruent with the University’s 2020-25 Strategic Plan – All Our Relations – which recognizes the important role we must play in redressing historical and current barriers to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) inclusion and representation in post-secondary education,” said Dr. Jeff Keshen, President and Vice-Chancellor. There are more details in the 2021 story.

Banting Fellowship Recipient

Congratulations to former U of R graduate student, Dr. Melanie Wilmink for being awarded a Banting Fellowship. On 28 November 2022, the Government of Canada announced the recipients of the 2021-22 Banting Fellowship program. Funded by the Government of Canada and administered by the Tri-Agency Council (SSHRC - social sciences & humanities, CHIR - health research, NSERC - natural sciences & engineering), the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program supports the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social, and research-based growth.

As one of 24 researchers chosen from a pool of 181 SSHRC applicants, Dr. Melanie Wilmink (alumnus of York University (PhD, 2020), the University of Regina (MA, 2014), and the University of Calgary (BFA, 2007) will be investigating "The art of the South Korean smart city: Creating knowledge in public space" at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. She is the first Banting scholar to hold the award in South Korea, and will be forging international connections between Canada and South Korea as both countries grapple with the implications of emergent technologies embedded into urban space.
