Decimated 49ers Fall to Chiefs, 28-18

Levi's Stadium was the scene as the Kansas City Chiefs prevailed for a sixth straight win over San Francisco. The 49ers received but couldn't move the ball. Mitch Wishnowsky (a regular nominee for Game MVP),

punted to the KC 15. A fake punt by KC failed, but a Brock Purdy interception, (first of three), gave KC the ball back. Bosa tipped a Patrick Mahomes pass which was snagged by big #93, Kalia Davis, but Mason was stopped twice as the camera zoomed in on Deebo on the

sidelines with an oxygen mask. With good "D" from Mustapha and Leonard Floyd, SF had the ball back, but could only muster a FG from their third kicker in three games, Anders Carlson, who hit from 55,

for a 3-0 lead to end the first quarter. The second quarter saw KC ramp up its offense and, coupled with SF penalties, go 70 yards on seven plays to take a 7-3 lead. A dropped pass by Brandon Aiyuk led to a 49er punt and a 13-play, 36-yard drive capped by a Kareem Hunt TD for a 14-3 KC lead. The crowd's first real cheer was for the return of Ricky Pearsall, now recovered from being shot in the chest some weeks earlier. Passes to George Kittle and rookie Jacob Cowing led to another Carlson FG, for a 14-6 KC halftime lead.

With Aiyuk out (no injury report yet), Alligator Lenoir intercepted Mahomes. Juszczyk pushed Purdy enough for a first down, and Brock ran it in for a TD to make it 14-12, KC. Inexplicably, the Niners decided to kick for an extra point, instead of a two-point conversion which would have tied the game. The kick missed, and SF had voluntarily placed itself into two-possession situations later in the game. After good 'D' by Charvarius Ward, KC punted. Jordan Mason broke through to the 50-yard line, and the 49ers had momentum. However, Purdy, a mere mortal on this Sunday, was intercepted and it was 14-12 until Mahomes ran one in to make it 21-12 (note - two possession situation). "Terrible Defense" stated Tom Brady, who called the game. Passes to Kittle and Cowing took SF to the 10-yard line, but all for naught as Mason was stuffed and Brock was intercepted

in the end zone. Creative play calls and a Mecole Hardman run made it 28-12. As the fourth quarter hit 3:00, after Kittle, Pearsall and Ronnie Bell combined to drive SF to the 1-yard line, Purdy ran it in to make the final score 28-18 as the 2-point conversion attempt failed. (For the cherry on top, the Niners' onside kick failed to go 10 yards.) Outcoached and outscored, the game was over, with San Francisco now 3-4, with Christian McCaffery, Hargrave, Deebo, Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings ("Mr. Clutch"), and Greenlaw all injured, plus a kicker-to-be-named later. They need to whip Dallas, take advantage of the bye-week schedule to regroup and get back to full strength and return as Authentic, Super Bowl Winners: the San Francisco 49ers!

Attention Online Gamblers

I watched with dismay as one of the countless ESPN experts shared her self-proclaimed "Special" -- "Lewis Hamilton Plus 400 to be on the podium at the U.S. Formula One race."

Here's an actual tip, whether or not you are a proponent of BET World. DO NOT BET ON MOTOR SPORTS

The real experts know this. The greatest car with the best driver can have a 25-cent part ruin an entire day. The people who actually know about motor sports do not bet on motor sports. Neither should you.

Lewis Hamilton was a DNF (as in "Did Not Finish).

Cal Bears 23

North Carolina State Wolfpack 24

Memorial Stadium, Berkeley, CA

Saturday, October 19, 2024

Under perfect conditions, Cal and NC State would battle in air attacks as neither team could establish running games. Cal would extend their lead to 13 points by the end of the third quarter, but would give up two touchdowns in the fourth to fall, 24-23. The Golden Bears have now lost four games in a row by a total of nine points. The total for the last three games is four points. Above, bursting through the line from 49 yards out, Oakland native Jaivian Thomas (#25) would score two touchdowns in the game and lead all rushers with 78 yards as the Golden Bears played host to the North Carolina State Wolfpack at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, October 19 in Berkeley.  Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.

The menacing Golden Bear defense would log six sacks with a total loss of 33 yards in the game. Here the tandem of defensive lineman Aidan Keanaaina (#47) and inside linebacker Cheikhsaliou Fall (#17) bring down Wolfpack quarterback CJ Bailey.

Danville’s Jack Endries (#87) uses a stiff arm to extend the run after the catch and finished as the game-leading receiver with nine catches and 101 total yards. Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.

Fernando Mendoza (#15) keeps the ball for a quarterback run toward the end zone but wisely breaks into a slide at the four-yard line to prevent the impending hit by the defender. Cal would score in several plays, extending the lead to 23-10 late in the third quarter.  Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.

Midway through the fourth quarter and under constant pressure, Wolfpack quarterback CJ Bailey (#16) was forced to throw earlier than intended as blitzing cornerback Cam Sidney (#20) applied the hit, with the game-leading tackler Teddye Buchanan (#10) jumping to block the pass. Cal's Ineptitude

Bears'

Foot

Disease

by Dave Newhouse

Two Saturdays ago while watching the Cal-Pittsburgh game on television, I heard it said that this was only the second football game between the two schools, dating back to the first time in 1966.

I let that sink in for a moment before realizing I was at that game in Berkeley, because I covered Cal sports for the Oakland Tribune during that decade. Cal won that day, 30-15, after which the Pitt coach, Dave Hart, accused Cal of padding the final score. Cal coach Ray Willsey was sarcastically amused by that remark, for Cal football at the time was more accustomed to being the abused than the abuser.

Moments before the snap of the ball, freshman placekicker Derek Morris (#99) lines up in the second quarter to kick a 41-yard field goal. In the closing seconds of the game, Morris missed a 28-yard attempt wide right which would have given the Golden Bears their first ACC Conference win. Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.

Willsey turned the Bears into winners in the late 1960s, actually being ranked in the top 10 nationally despite historic campus unrest that made recruiting difficult. It was one of the finest coaching jobs against overwhelming odds I’ve ever witnessed.

Back then, in my naivete, I wondered how long would it be until Cal returned to the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, realizing its last bowl visit to Pasadena was in 1959. Sadly, I’m still waiting 50-plus years later.

Following Cal football is a roller-coaster ride, up and down. Coach Jeff Tedford offered the most realistic Rose Bowl hope early this century, when Cal had Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch. But even that bid backfired in a weird revote by the nation’s coaches.

Unfortunately for Cal, something always goes wrong at the most inopportune moments. These past two seasons, Cal has been defined with solid defense, satisfactory offense, positive punting and — here’s the one glaring negative — dismal field goal kicking.

Between the first and second quarters, Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox answers questions for the onsite ACC Network sideline reporter. Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.

Before engaging North Carolina State (3-4) this past Saturday at Memorial Stadium, Cal’s field goal accuracy was below .500. You can’t be a winner with such deficiency, and that's why Cal (3-3) had lost three games by a total of eight points.

Missing makeable field goals has been a massive problem, actually, for Coach Justin Wilcox for two years despite different field goal kickers. Speaking of Pitt this time around, the Panthers were undefeated and ranked when Cal came to town. But the Bears made Pitt look beatable with its tough defense. Then with just under two minutes left to play, the Bears had another makeable field goal that would have given them the lead, and possibly the victory with that stingy defense. The kick went wide right, and Pitt won, 17-15.

When does this ever stop? I’m not sure how strong Wilcox’s heart is, but it’s been tested these past two years by field goal purgatory. Yes, he picked the field goal kickers, unless the field kickers picked Cal. Regardless, when your kicking accuracy is a negative, who cares? Then — holy, moly! — Cal made two field goals Saturday to take a 13-10 halftime lead. These latest attempts were more like conversion kicks, though with Cal fans, there is no certainty in the kicking game.

Adding to the pain of losing the game, Cal also suffered the loss of their stalwart left tackle with 30 seconds remaining. A cart was required to remove senior offensive lineman T.J. Session (#72) from the field. Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.

Overall, it’s a whole new world playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference. And it’s been rough going for the Golden Bears, largely due to their generosity. They had a 35-10 third-quarter lead over No. 8 Miami, yet lost 39-38. But a clear roughing the passer penalty against Miami late in the game wasn’t called, despite a helmet-to-helmet shot against Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza that flattened him for five minutes. Thus Cal was unable to run out the clock, enabling Miami to mount a comeback victory.

Disappointment has been Cal’s lot lately, but — hold it! — another short Bears field goal pushed their lead to 16-10 in the third quarter against North Carolina State. Could it be that Cal would have its first ACC football triumph? Some happiness, perhaps?

Cal then built a 23-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter. But Cal is Cal, and two quick Wildcat touchdowns gave the visitors a 24-23 lead with 6:32 left. Oh, no, field goal time?

The Bears then marched down into red zone territory, but a 28-yard field goal attempt with 1:34 remaining sailed — what else? — wide right. Four losses by nine points -- how long can this torture continue?

Cal football. A’s baseball. I’ve got to find something positive to write about.

Los Tiburones – Successful Hispanic Night at SAP in San José

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

On Saturday, October 12, the Sharks celebrated Hispanic Night at the SAP Arena. A capacity crowd of 17,916 joined the fiesta with 100X100 Hispanic flavor, including a live Mariachi band, Balet Folklórico Mexicano.

Los Tiburones played their California rivals, the Anaheim Ducks. It was a very entertaining night, which ended with a 2-0 win for Anaheim.

The action was broadcast live on NBC Sports California, with all the action in Spanish on the Secondary Audio Channel, as well as on Sharks Audio, with Carlos Ramírez handling all the play-by-play while I provided commentary and promotional announcements for the whole 2024-25 Sharks season.

Sergio Almodovar, coordinator for the Sharks Media Relations, joined us after the second half ended with insightful information about the 2024-25 Sharks season; he talked about how important the Hispanic community is for the San José Sharks.

Almodovar, born and raised in the Bay Area, is of Mexican heritage. San José is over 30% Hispanic and a community that keeps growing. Some of the most famous Spanish media in the Bay Area are in San José, including KSTS CH 48 Telemundo Network, and some of the highest audiences in Spanish on radio stations are in the Bay Area’s largest city.

San José is California’s third most populous city, with Los Angeles #1 and San Diego #2. The largest city in Northern California is a global hub for the high-tech industry, home of world-famous Silicon Valley and hosts annual conferences like Facebook F8 and the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference.

Spanish is the state of California’s unofficial second language. With a total population of around 40 million, there are nearly 20 million Hispanics. Here in the nine-county Bay Area, 20% of the population is Hispanic/Latino, by far the largest minority in the state and in the Bay Area.

As of July 1, 2023, the Hispanic population in the United States was 65.2 million. The United States of America is #2 with the most significant number of Spanish speakers. México is number one, with 128 million people who speak Spanish.

The Florida Panthers, Chicago Blackhawks, and Vegas Knights have all added Spanish-language broadcasts to serve their Hispanic fan bases.

As Sports Anchor of Telemundo CH 48, I covered the Sharks first game on October 5, 1991, against the Vancouver Canucks at the Cow Palace in Daly City before they moved to SAP Center in San José in 1993.

In 2016 we covered the first Stanley Cup for the team as they played the Pittsburgh Penguins and lost the series in seven games.

The San José Sharks partnership with the Hispanic/Latino community is more important today than ever.

The Sharks are now a Bay Area institution for the last 33 years. And we all hope their best seasons are soon to come.

LAFC 3, Quakes 1

LOS ANGELES – The San Jose Earthquakes fell to Los Angeles Football Club 3-1 on Saturday night in front of 22,137 fans at a sold-out BMO Stadium to close the 2024 Major League season.

The Earthquakes struck first blood in the ninth minute when a high line of pressure led to Paul Marie intercepting a wayward pass. The winger subsequently pushed a through ball to midfielder Jackson Yueill, who slalomed his way through the LAFC back line and clinically finished with his left foot past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to give San Jose an early 1-0 lead. Hernán López almost doubled the advantage late in the first half when he snuck into the attacking third to steal a pass, but his subsequent shot from outside the box ended up in Lloris’ arms.

After intermission, the hosts equalized in the 64th minute when a Quakes back line clearance fortuitously bounced right to LAFC forward Denis Bouanga, who chested down the ball in the box and blasted it past goalkeeper Daniel to make it 1-1. In the 75th minute, moments after entering the game, LAFC midfielder Eduard Atuesta took a one-two from Kei Kamara in the box and hammered home the go-ahead goal. Marlon Santos added an insurance goal in the first minute of stoppage time when he headed in a corner kick from Atuesta.

Oakland Roots Clinch Playoff Spot With 3-2 Win in Las Vegas

Oakland Roots took the lead through Johnny Rodriguez, who netted his 11th goal of the season off a rebound to put his side up 1-0 against the Las Vegas Lights.

Vegas equalized in the 12th minute after a quick restart led to a cross, which deflected off Oakland’s captain, Neveal Hackshaw, resulting in an own goal, leveling the game at 1-1.

Las Vegas forced Oakland Roots keeper Paul Blanchette into multiple huge saves to keep the game at 1-1 headed into the halftime break.

Oakland Roots scored against the run of play when Luis Sinisterra turned quickly to find the net, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead with half an hour left in the game.

Johnny Rodriguez doubled Oakland’s lead when Irakoze Donasiyano found the team’s leading goal scorer for his 12th of the year, giving Roots a commanding 3-1 advantage.

Las Vegas pulled one back with a long range strike from Valentin Noël to make it 3-2 in stoppage time.

With the win, Oakland Roots clinched a playoff spot with one week remaining in the season, securing their berth in the postseason for the third time in four seasons.

The squad will now return home for their final regular season match versus Birmingham Legion FC on Saturday, Oct. 26th.

Club enters final week of regular season above playoff line, in eighth place in the NWSL standings

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2024) – Bay FC defeated the North Carolina Courage 1-0 on Saturday night at PayPal Park. Late heroics by Abby Dahlkemper sent a strong crowd of 14,901 home happy on Fan Appreciation Night as the club put in the lone score of the match with just seven minutes remaining.

Deadlocked at 0-0 with less than 10 minutes left, Bay FC broke through in the 83rd minute. After a foul by North Carolina provided a set play opportunity, a free kick taken by Racheal Kundananji was played into the box, where Dahlkemper put it over the line for her first goal since her NWSL debut for the club on August 30 at Portland. With the victory, Bay FC ties the NWSL record for wins by an expansion club in its debut season (10) and remains above the playoff line with one game remaining in the regular season.

Bill Walsh -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee

I met 49er head coach Bill Walsh at a 49ers Fan Appreciation Day many years ago. I knew he was attending the event so I brought this photo for him to sign. When I saw him walking on the field by himself I caught up to him and asked him to sign my photo and even personalized it to me. Bill Walsh coached the 49ers for

10 years and won three Super Bowls in that time.

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought

It caught my attention when I read part of a Margaret Fleming tweet this week that said, "Diego Pavia claimed a shirt with his name, image, and coined phrase wasn't authorized by him. The company selling the shirt says it was."

How could that possibly happen?

It's not surprising when you dig into the details, which many athletes fail to do before executing written contracts.

Yes, this is another opportunity for me to preach that it is very important for people to read and understand contracts before they execute them.

So, what happened in this particular instance?

According to Fleming's report, apparel company BreakingT released a shirt with Pavia's name and image and included his statement, "Vandy We Turnt," which he uttered after Vanderbilt beat Alabama when Pavia instantly morphed from someone few had even heard about to a quarterback that people were at least temporarily obsessed with.

Pavia discovered BreakingT's efforts to capitalize on Pavia's instant fame and wrote, "This is not me.. WE HAVENT WORKED OUT A DEAL! DO NOT ORDER."

There was one slight problem with his comment that he deleted soon thereafter.

He indirectly did work out a deal; he just was not aware of it.

Finalists will gather in London for the black-tie awards gala at the Peninsula Hotel on Nov. 22 to celebrate the very best in the classic and collector car world.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion previously won the award in 2022 for its celebration and kickoff to the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“This is a monumental honor for the many participants who bring their historic cars to race, our sponsors who annually support the event, and our many volunteers, Advisory Council members and the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca team who pour their passion into ensuring the event’s success,” commented John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “It is particularly rewarding as the Rolex Reunion signaled the official transfer from the County of Monterey to Friends of Laguna Seca, a non-profit organization that is entrusted in taking this iconic circuit to a heightened new level that has never been seen before.”

The centerpiece of the paddock was an incredible display of 29 race cars representing the past marques over 50 years. This carefully curated collection, that will likely never be seen together again, attracted consistent crowds of enthusiasts, families and journalists who enjoyed these moments in history.

Historic racing in Monterey began in 1974 with just 66 cars for a one-day race as a complement to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Founded by Steven Earle, the Monterey Historic Automobile Races became the standard bearer for all major historic race events that followed. Rebranded as the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in 2010 and under new ownership, the event now accepts approximately 400 entries and continues to uphold the same strict authenticity, period history and car preparation, and driving standards.

Cal Has Stellar Showing At Stanford

Alexy Sweeps The Sprint Freestyle Events

STANFORD – The No. 1 California men's swimming & diving team completed a stellar performance Friday in the annual Triple Distance Meet against No. 7 Stanford. In his first appearance this season, senior Jack Alexy swept the sprint freestyle events.

A non-team-scoring meet, the Triple Distance Meet splits swimmers into event groups (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, sprint freestyle, distance free and individual medley) and requires swims at three different distances within the event: 50, 100 and 200 yards in the fly, breast, back and sprint free; 200, 500, 1,000 in the distance free; and 100, 200 and 400 in the IM.

The Golden Bears won 10 of the 20 events, including the sweep by Alexy in the sprint free (50: 19:60, 100: 43:39 and the 200: 1:37.16). The Bears fell short of the sweep in the breast, back and distance events.

Freshman Yamato Okadome nearly cliched a sweep in the breaststroke after winning the 100 (53.74) and 200 (1:56.52). Okadome placed second in the 50 with a time of 24.83, a mere 0.13 seconds behind the first-place finisher.

Graduate student Bjorn Seeliger had a great night in the backstroke events after claiming first in the 50 (22.13) and 100 (48.03). He missed out on the sweep after placing fourth in the 200 with a time of 1:46.09. Senior Ziyad Saleem edged out a second-place finish with a time of 1:45.64.

Junior Matthew Chai shined in the distance free events after winning the 500 (4:24.27) and 1000 (9:03.55) while taking third place in the 200 (1.42.16).

In the 200-yard freestyle, the "A" group of Alexy, graduate student Matthew Jensen, senior Robin Hanson and freshman Lucca Battaglini claimed first with a time of 1:19.35.

Cal will have a layoff until their tri-meet against Arizona State and Stanford on Nov. 7.

More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series.
