Our #MyMagisMessage for the week comes from Blake Yoho, a graduate student in the Master's of Education program and the graduate assistant in CSSA! Blake has served with Shoreview Elementary through Carroll Reads, St. Martin de Porres High School, and St. Francis School!
If you had to state your life mission off the top of your head, in one sentence, what would it be?
To seek out community to grow, to be challenged by others to learn, and to fight for justice for all.
#MyMagisMessage
When I was a high school student and first learned of "Magis," the "more" that we are called to do, I focused on how much more I could do every day. I volunteered for as many activities as I could, I did as many clubs as I could, and I talked to as many people as I could. After several months of doing "more," I became exhausted. I didn't understand why all of the things I had been doing, which seemed to me at the time to be important and good work, were leaving me drained and not quite fulfilled.
In the several years since first encountering "Magis", I've come to understand more deeply the "more" that we are called to do. Instead of doing more service, we are called to be more engaged with those whom we are in community. Instead of talking to more people, we are called to listen more to those with whom we interact each day. Instead of overloading on credit hours or taking on more research, we are called to called to invest more into what we are already doing and to do it well.
Living the "Magis" is not been about doing more, which fourteen-year-old Blake would've believed; rather it is about being more. How can we be better? How can we fight for justice more passionately? How can we seek truth more fully? How can we wake up each day and be nicer to everyone whom we encounter? Simply, how can we love more?
As my time as graduate assistant for the Center for Service and Social Action comes to a close, I am reminded of how many people in the most unlikely of places both at John Carroll and throughout all of my experiences in Cleveland and around the country have taught me how to be more. Each day is a new opportunity to learn from others on how to be better people, and as you go into your next chapter - whether graduation, the next semester, a new job, a new family - I challenge you to look for the "Magis" and to connect with others and yourself in a deeper, more loving way.
