Get Involved! Weekly service is a ten-week commitment over a semester and works with your schedule! Engage in a wide range of activities serving children, youth, senior citizens, people experiencing homelessness, refugees, people with disabilities, and more.
For students in a service-learning course:
- Registration opens on Tuesday, January 18 at 9:00 am
- Registration closes on Tuesday, January 25 at 5:00 pm

The Return of Carroll Ballers!

Great News! We are happy to announce the return of the Carroll Ballers Program this semester!
The Carroll Ballers program is a unique service opportunity that combines the game of basketball with an original mentoring program for residents of the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center (CCJDC). The goal is a successful re-entry to the greater Cleveland community after time at the CCJDC.
Carroll Ballers combines playing the game of basketball with mentoring residents at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center and the Ohio Department of Youth Services. JCU participants in this program build relationships with young men and women at the JDC through conversation and healthy competition in the gym.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

Assist low-income residents with Tax Return Preparation
|
The Center for Service and Social Action and the Boler College of Business are recruiting students to participate in the federal Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which helps low to moderate-income individuals and families prepare their income tax returns without professional fees.
Service-learning courses are being offered for 0 and 1 credit options this Spring 2022 through the Department of Accountancy.
- Gain important tax preparation skills
- Gain hours towards your CPA exam requirement
- Make a difference during this pandemic!

AC 170/270/370/470 (1 credit)
AC 173/273/373/473 (0 credit)
There is a mandatory virtual training, Saturday, January 22 from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, and students in the course typically are required to assist with two tax preparation Saturdays in the spring. The tax preparation will be conducted in person and virtually with the assistance of Cuyahoga EITC Coalition.
Students of all majors are welcome to register!
No pre-requisites or exams

Are you looking for a high-impact exciting summer internship? Apply for CSSA's Advocacy, Solidarity, and Social Change Summer Internship Program!
The Advocacy, Solidarity, and Social Change Internships enable qualified students to explore what it means to engage in advocacy at non-profit organizations through advocacy, solidarity and social change. This 10-week immersive experience will connect hands-on experience with an exploration of the root causes of the social issues the organizations confront. Students will prepare a project for the organization that promotes social change.
Internship Dates: May 31-August 5, 2022
Compensation: $3,500 stipend, plus additional $500 for completion of the research project.
Deadline for Applicants: Sunday, January 30, 2022

Become an Early Literacy Tutor!

Carroll Reads is a federally-funded tutoring program aimed at helping children in elementary grades develop reading skills. If you are looking for a paid federal work-study position, this is a great opportunity to work with children in the community. Tutors are paid $11.00 per hour for tutoring twice/week, approximately 5 hours per week.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting one-on-one tutoring sessions with students using educator-provided materials.
- Building rapport and cultivating enthusiasm with the children.
- Assisting children in developing their reading and writing skills to reach grade-level expectations.
- Weekly documenting and reviewing student data with the Carroll Reads Site Coordinators to gauge the effectiveness of interventions.
- Regularly checking in with Carroll Reads Coordinators and Student Liaisons for continued training and assistance in tutoring.
- Committing to tutoring two days per week, for ten weeks, over the course of the semester.
