RESOURCES

Thank you to everyone who attended last night's Community Meeting on Literacy. We were overwhelmed with the turnout, the attention given to those speaking, and the thoughtful questions asked. While we will not be publishing a video of the meeting, we have made the presentation and the handouts available on our website and below:

Presentation, Literacy Umbrellas, Balanced Literacy vs Science of Reading, Resources for Home

If you would like to host a small meeting in your home, our volunteers are happy to go through the presentation and answer questions you and your guests may have. Please email us at hpliteracycoalition@gmail.com or contact one of the parent volunteers listed on our website to make arrangements.

HPISD PARENT SURVEY - DUE THURSDAY!

We highly encourage every parent of a K-8th grade student to complete the survey sent out by the district. You must include the email address on file in Skyward to complete the survey, so that the district can verify the survey is valid. If you didn't receive the survey in your inbox, contact your campus to make sure your email address is in Skyward and click here to complete the survey.

The ELA subcommittee will use the survey's results as a data point for decision making, so it's important that every K-8th grade parent participates. Surveys are due by the end of the day on Thursday, March 10th.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TUESDAY, MARCH 22nd at 5:30pm

Please make plans to attend the school board meeting the Tuesday after Spring Break. A strong presence at the meeting is a tangible way for trustees to see that there are many parents concerned about literacy in HPISD.

Not only is your presence in the meeting important, but having parents speak can also be very effective. If you would like to speak, but are uncertain about the process - our parent volunteers are happy to help. Please email us at hpliteracycoalition@gmail.com or use the contact form on our website.

HPISD LEADERS NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU

The ELA subcommittee will soon conclude fact-finding efforts and members plan to review information over Spring Break. New board work sessions have been scheduled for the end of the month so that all trustees can begin discussing HPISD's literacy curriculum and decisions that might need to be made soon.

It is very important that the superintendent and every board member hear from you. When contacting HPISD leaders, please share your family's personal experiences with literacy in the district and share any concerns you have. In solidarity, we hope that your email will also include the following:

I support efforts to remove balanced literacy practices, including Lucy Calkins Units of Study and Fountas & Pinnell, from HPISD schools. Please provide leadership and resources so that students can benefit from new practices aligned to the Science of Reading in Fall 2022.
