PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Trust

By: Khalil Rahman, MD

During the period between 2020 to the current time our medical field faced a wave of mistrust by patients. They were receiving lots of information from many sources, some of it fabricated, some of it misunderstood, but most of it evolving. The evolution of science during the pandemic was easy for physicians to understand and accept because we know there are very few absolutes in medicine and our knowledge of accepted medical practice changes. Thus, as information changed and evolved in a relatively short period of time, some frightened patients developed mistrust of the government and the healthcare system and its agents, which included physicians. We, as physicians, were not trained for this level of mistrust that we are face during our lifetime. Despite being called HEROs by most, providing the most current information of the time, still many did not believe in us or the messages we were trying to impart.

10th District KMA Board of Trustee Update

By Tuyen Tran, MD, MBA, FACP, FASAM & Emily Schott, KMA, Director of Communications

Many will remember the havoc the CoVID-19 pandemic caused; but the recovery and rebuilding after the pandemic will definitely stress our systems, resources, and routines. Fortunately, the leadership at our medical societies (KMA, GLMS, Northern Kentucky, and LMS) have risen to the challenges and somehow, managed to keep us on course.

Before providing the advocacy updates, I would like to personally thank you for providing me the opportunity to serve as your representative for the 10th District KMA Board of Trustee. It has been an honor and privilege to serve you in this capacity. I also want to thank the wonderful staff at KMA, particularly Emily Schott for providing me such incredible assistance and summaries for the updates.

Children's Advocacy Center of the BG

By Taylor Ballinger

Since 1994, the Children's Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass has worked to reduce the trauma experienced by child victims of sexual abuse and bring hope and healing to families throughout Central Kentucky. Previous to the Center’s opening, children who reported abuse often had to navigate a difficult and confusing system of multiple, repetitive interviews and exams, which both added to their trauma and led to worse prosecutorial and treatment outcomes.

Now, the system is streamlined for the benefit of the child and to ensure they and their families receive the full spectrum of care needed. The Children's Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass is modeled on the simple but powerful concept of coordination between community agencies and professionals involved in the intervention system which increases rates of successful prosecution and health outcomes for the children and families served.

The Relaxation Response

Just relax! It sounds so simple. Relaxation is indeed simple but it isn’t necessarily easy. More to the point- there are many unskillful, unhealthy lifestyle ways to relax. But you, your staff and your patients can achieve significant cardiovascular and other health benefits from the regular practice of skillful relaxation for stress management.

One of the best ways to skillfully relax is by practicing the ‘relaxation response.’ Harvard cardiologist Herbert Benson coined the phrase ‘relaxation response’ in the 1970s after studying meditation’s effects on cardiovascular disease and other medical conditions. He basically gave a popular name to the parasympathetic activity of the autonomic nervous system- the ‘rest and digest’ antidote to the sympathetic ‘fight or flight’ response. His research showed that the simple practice of skillful relaxation helped lower blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, muscle tension and overall metabolic rate- even helping some patients reduce their medication needs.

Year-End Financial Planning & Investments Among Market Volatility

By Andy Reynolds, CFP, MBA, COO/Partner - Ballast, Inc.

With the recent stock market volatility, many investors have, and understandably so, buried their heads in the sand, shredding investment statements without looking and focusing outside their financial life. While many choose not to look, the volatility provides significant opportunities for financial improvement, several of which we have not experienced in many years.

Below are areas to consider by the end of the year. Proactive planning is beneficial during expansionary times and in years of contraction.
