PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Strengthening Training and Advancement in Research (STAR)

The UAB CFAR CDEIPI program, Strengthening Training and Advancement in Research (STAR), is being led by Latesha Elopre, MD and Aadia Rana, MD.

The goal of STAR is to increase diversity in HIV research by providing mentorship opportunities for high school, undergraduate, and graduate student students. During this first year of the CDEIPI program, the focus was on conducting an environmental scan of existing programs serving underrepresented groups in medicine and partnerships at UAB to develop the STAR program. In year two, the goal is to create and pilot a curriculum focused on mentorship in HIV research.

ADMINISTRATIVE CORE UPDATES

The Coordinating Center (CC) shared that the word Pipeline would be changed to Pathway in the name of the Program. The CDEIPI overview manuscript is under review at JAIDS, and the proposal for a CDEIPI Supplement in JAIDS with 19 articles was recently accepted. The CDEIPI program was included on the agenda for the Directors meeting at the National CFAR Meeting hosted by the Third Coast CFAR on Nov 3-4, with several CDEIPI programs providing recorded summaries about their local efforts, see the videos here.

PROGRAM CORE UPDATES

The Program Core held its monthly meeting on October 27. The Core thanked the program leads for their support in invoicing the DC CFAR for CDEIPI 1 funds and noted that a second and final 6-month no-cost extension will be granted to each site unless they opt-out. The group then discussed several key issues including how programs are managing the interface between Years 1 and 2, lessons learned from their Year 1 program, and how CDEIPI can be sustained over time.
