GCEP Project Update - April

Hello,

Thank you for your continued interest in the Greater Cambridge Energy Program. Happy Spring!

This month our contractor crews continued with field tests or "test pits" along the proposed Project routes. Here is a summary of progress in Cambridge and Somerville as well as anticipated upcoming locations:

Cambridge:

  • Broadway - off of the public roadway @ Volpe Center (Ongoing)
  • Cardinal Medeiros Ave - between Binney Street and Cambridge Street (Upcoming)

Somerville:

  • Charlestown Street - north of Windsor Place and between Linden Street and Allen Street (Upcoming)

*The activity will continue over the next several months at various locations in Cambridge, Somerville, and Allston/Brighton. Locations will be promoted to nearby property owners in advance of new activities commencing.

Work Hours

  • Typical construction hours field test activities are Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some work may be conducted outside of these hours based on traffic volumes and will require municipal approval.

Why Are You Doing Test Pits?

Field tests, otherwise known as test pits, are being completed to further the Project's engineering efforts.

We caught up with Eversource's Allison Klein to ask her more about it.

What is a test pit?

A test pit is a tool used to refine the underground duct bank design to determine location and depth of utilities and possible conflicts, depth of bedrock, or other purposes where specific soil property testing sampling is not required.

Why is the Project doing test pits?

To confirm that the existing underground utilities and conflicts shown on our plans are in the locations and depths anticipated as identified on our surveys. Confirming this information allows us to shift the proposed duct bank or manhole location as needed based on the actual location of existing infrastructure.

Elsewhere along the routes, geotechnical and thermal resistivity borings will provide data on soil classifications and properties that also influence the designs.

Allison Klein is Eversource’s Lead Transmission Line Engineer on the Greater Cambridge Energy Program. Allison has worked for Eversource for 12 years.

Celebrating Earth Day and Arbor Day!

Working with the Charles River Conservancy, a team of Eversource employees helped clean up the Charles River watershed on a sunny Earth Day morning. There is nothing like stepping outside with a group of friends to make your community and the planet a little cleaner!

Eversource dedicated vegetation management team celebrates arbor day by planting trees to enhance neighborhood greenery.

Each year, the team plans several community outreach events to share their love of trees. Crews plant trees, hand out seedlings, prune notable trees and visit schools.

Keeping you Informed

Eversource is committed to being a good neighbor and keeping you informed of Project progress.
