Adult Education Forums

Sunday, May 5 and Sunday, May 12

Pastor Hank French will lead a two-part study on the topic of Christian Nationalism, an extreme movement trying to reshape American political, economic, and civic life by fusing them with a particular type of “Christian identity.” On May 5th the forum will explore the beliefs, goals, ideological commitments, and strategies of Christian nationalism. On May 12th, the forum will consider several biblical texts that provide a faith-centered vision of the role of Christianity in the modern world that runs counter to and challenges Christian nationalism. Please join us!

“Great God, Your Love Has Called Us” ELW 358

Today’s Gospel from John 15:9-17 has Jesus explaining about what kind of love this is that comes from God, through Jesus, and engulfs all of us. He starts by making it clear that Jesus has loved us, in the same way that God has loved him. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” So we offer gratitude to God and Jesus through praise for that love, but what we do with that love is the point. We “pay it forward’ Just as Jesus followed the example of how God loved him, thereby loving humanity, we offer love and service to others in the same way that Jesus loved us.

Today we sing, “Great God, Your Love Has Called Us” ELW 358. Written by Brian Wren in April of 1973. Wren was born in Essex, England in 1936 and educated in Oxford with degrees earned in 1960, 1962, and 1968. He was ordained as a pastor in the United Reformed Church of Great Britain in 1965. His passions in his work have been all about the power of language, congregational song, the practice of public worship, justice, peace, and global equality. In Great God, Wren uses all first person (genderless pronouns); “you” and “we”. In stanza 1, we sing about God’s love, that which has called us together, “as we, by love, for love were made.” “We come, with all our heart and mind your call to hear, your love to find.” In stanza 2 we see Wren’s cry of hope. “We come with self inflicted pains of broken trust and chosen wrong. Half-free, half-bound by inner chains, by social forces swept along, by powers and systems close confined, yet seeking hope for humankind”. In stanza 3, he references the Mandatum (commandment) from Maundy Thursday, to “love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12). At the end of the stanza, “ We strain to glimpse your mercy seat and find you kneeling at our feet.(as we did in foot-washing on Maundy Thursday). Stanza 4 has the reference to Jesus calling us his “friends” (John 15:15). And finally in stanza 5, the power of God’s love to make all things new: “Great God, in Christ you set us free your life to live, your joy to share. Give us your Spirit’s liberty to turn from guilt and dull despair, and offer all that faith can do while love is making all things new.”

Peace!

Busy Weeks for LCR Youth

The young people in our congregation are busy! Our high school students meet weekly to connect, reflect, and examine their faith. Some are involved in advanced instruction in church music and performance at Lutheran Summer Music. Others experience Bible study, chapel, games, and fun at Camp WAPO. Along with weekly Sunday school classes, the preschool and elementary kids have opportunities to get together and enjoy themselves, with older kids and adults at an annual late-over and other activities. And this year five high school kids are going to attend the ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans!

To support all of these activities, the Youth and Education committee is going to hold several fundraisers in the coming months. Below is a list of coming events! We hope you will be able to join us as we work together to help the kids as they grow in faith!

Sunday, May 5 Annual Bake Sale

May Mission of the Month – Cherish All Children

Dear friends at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection,

We thank you for being one of our strong partners, committed to keeping children and youth safe from sexual exploitation and trafficking, and supporting their growth into healthy relationships.

Our work continues to evolve, and your support helps us move into new ways of supporting youth and families in our communities.

  •  Online sextortion of boys, girls and non-binary youth is a significantly growing crime that youth and families can prevent if aware and educated. The FBI, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and Department of Homeland Security issued a national public safety alert urging parents and caregivers to intervene.
  • Cherish All Children hosted an online Education Event “Protecting Youth from Online Sextortion” during National Human Trafficking Prevention month. We encourage you to watch the recording and share the resources available.
  • Sextortion is a form of child sexual exploitation where children are manipulated into sending a sexual image or video, then threatened and blackmailed by a person who demands additional sexual content, activity, or money from the child. What begins as an online friendship or romantic relationship quickly changes into a scary and desperate situation for the child.
  • This crime can be prevented and we are committed to supporting young people and families with your help.
  • Our Safe and Healthy Relationships Youth Guide is now available in Spanish! We’ll be reaching more faith communities in the United States and just returned from Guatemala to share this resource with our ELCA partner churches there.
  • Save the dates for our annual Cherish All Children hybrid 5K June 7-9!

Your donations help us to reach more churches and communities to engage in this work together for the safety of all God’s children. Visit our website for all our resources and connect with us at info@cherishallchildren.org.

Blessings & Peace to you!

Pancake Fundraiser for Emmet D. Williams School a Success

There was a good turnout of hungry diners for the Pancake Fundraiser on Saturday, April 27. More than $1,500 was raised at the event.

One attendee sent this note of thanks to those who organized the event:

I want to thank you for putting on the pancake breakfast fundraiser for Emmett D. Williams Elementary on Saturday. (My daughter attends EDW and we live just a few blocks away.) We really enjoyed the food, and everyone working there was so kind, friendly, and helpful. We were joined at our table by some members of the congregation, and it was fun to get to know them. Hearing the Irish band play was the cherry on top. We really appreciate you doing this, both as a fundraiser for EDW and fun community meal. Thanks to all who planned and ran this wonderful event. We are lucky to have your church and its wonderful members in our neighborhood.

Best regards
