Beta Mu Gamma Attends Conference

Beta Mu Gamma, the Solano College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, traveled to the NV/CA 2022 Fall Leadership Conference in El Segundo, CA recently.

Representing Solano were BMG-PTK members Karissa Brown, Cindel Harris, Danielle Jones, Grecia Lopez, and Cherry Quitugua. At the conference, these students practiced leadership, networking, and project management skills. Co-advisors LaNae Jaimez and Michael Wyly also benefitted from professional development to bring Solano’s Beta Mu Gamma chapter into top standing with the PTK international office. Go Falcons!

Speech & Debate Team Compete in Reno

Join me congratulating your Solano Speech and Debate team which competed at the Big Little City Invitational held at the University of Nevada Reno on October 15th & 16th.

Your team competed against Colleges and Universities from California, Oregon, Utah, Nevada, and Idaho and won Three 1st Place awards, 3rd Place Sweepstakes in the Two-Year Community College Division, and every Solano competitor won an award. This honor is even more special since this tournament marks our first travel tournament of year in which we brought a small team comprised of only our top competitors, many who are in there 1st semester competing.

Our next tournament is the Mustang Invitational & Paul Winters Invitational held at Delta Community College and University of the Pacific on November 4th – 6th. If you are interested in seeing exactly what our award-winning Solano Speech and Debate Team does, look forward to our next announcement for the date of Forensics Showcase which will take place in November at the Solano CC Theatre.

Below is a list of our accomplishments from another successful tournament:

  • 3rd Place Sweepstakes in the Two-Year Community College Division
  • 1st semester competitor Sarah Campri won Gold in Novice IPDA Debate and won 2nd place speaker of the entire tournament
  • Returning competitor James Baird won 1st Place in Open Informative Speaking, placing 1st in every round of the tournament
  • 1st semester competitor Jasmine Wilson won 1st Place in Open Poetry Interpretation. This honor is even more special as she won the event as a novice competitor competing against varsity competition.
  • 1st semester competitor Sofia Pineda won 2nd Place in Open Prose Interpretation. Sofia was also the top Novice competitor in this event
  • 1st semester competitor Frida Torres won 5th place in Open Informative Speaking.

Department of Public Safety Gives Out Challenge Coins to SCC Community

Solano Community College Department of Public Safety (SCCDPS) has begun awarding “Challenge Coins” to students, faculty and staff members for actions that will help improve campus life or acts of kindness. The coins contain the emblems of the SCCDPS shield and the Solano Community College Tree of Knowledge seal.

Challenge Coins began centuries ago in Europe when they give out coins for when soldiers did well on the battle field. This tradition started in the U.S. military during WWII. Soldiers were given challenge coins. They are a symbol of hard work and a job well done. They are physical proof of achievements in a soldier’s life. Each one has a story behind it. What the soldier did and had gone through to earn it.

Below are the most recent stories.

SCC Employee Herman Porter Personal Sacrifice Story: During lunch time, Herman saw a homeless gentleman looking through a garbage can by the cafeteria, trying to find something to drink. Herman had just purchased a water bottle to quench his thirst but he didn’t even think twice about his personal need before offering the water to the man. Thank you, Herman, for sacrificing your own needs to help someone who was truly in need! His personal sacrifice story is one of many stories that happen here at SCC every day.

First Year College Student “Jules” Act of Kindness Story: Jules was exiting the library when he noticed students were coming out the same door. The students’ hands were full of books and other items. Instead of letting the door shut on them, Jules stood by and held the door open for these students so they can exit safely. The students were very grateful to Jules for his act of kindness. They all exchanged greetings and smiles before they went different ways.

SCC Employees Danny Murillo and Steve Ercole Exude “Duty”: Many people know what the word “Duty” means. But how often do you see someone actually live up to it? Danny and Steve live this word every day, whether they’re on the job or off. Doing your duty means more than carrying out your assigned tasks. It means being able to accomplish your tasks as part of a team and making sure everyone on your team succeed in the overall mission. Danny and Steve are the backbone of our great facilities team we have here at SCC! They always ensure their team complete the overall mission at SCC.

Students Kyle, Dennis and Kaitlyn Selfless Service to SCC story: Selfless service is larger than just one person. It’s doing something without thought of recognition or personal gain. This is where these three come in. Solano College just completed a very successful Taube-Haase Pro Tennis Tournament. It was successful due in part to our trio of SCC students Kyle, Dennis and Kaitlyn who volunteered many hours of their time to help set up, helped run the tournament and then helped clean up long after the trophies were handed out and many of our visitors have departed. It’s because of students like them that SCC continues to shine so bright.

We will continue to share these great stories with our community throughout the school year.

50th Annual Scholarship Awards

On Tuesday, October 18th, scholarship awards were presented to Solano Community College students by the SCC Scholarship Foundation and SCC Educational Foundation. 131 scholarship awards were announced, totaling over $83,000.

Funding was provided by donors that want to help students achieve their education and career goals. Supporting a scholarship is a meaningful way to leave a legacy while honoring an important person in your life or supporting a student in your career field. Most students at Solano Community College receive some form of financial aid. But most need additional assistance for the things many of us take for granted, such as books, transportation, and personal computers. A scholarship awards students that are taking the initiative to improve their future and working hard to achieve academic success.

Please consider a scholarship gift today. Find out more at https://foundation.solano.edu/scholarship/ and check out our photo gallery here: https://foundation.solano.edu/2022-scholarship-awards.../

Puente Mentor/Student Mixer

Every year, the Solano Puente Project pairs the cohort of first-generation college students with mentors in the community. Mentors play a crucial role in students’ lives in and out of school, offering guidance and support as they navigate these early years of adulting.

This year the program held its first in-person Student-Mentor Mixer since the pandemic and it was a huge success. The turnout was so beyond expectations that the group barely fit into the combined Transfer and Career Center space. It was a noisy, fun event with food, games, and prizes leading up to students being introduced to their mentors.

A huge thanks to Emily Burt and Patricia Young for sharing their space, and to all the members of the Solano Community who support our Puentistas!

Beautiful Ofrenda

Many thanks to our Puentistas and the Art faculty for the beautiful ofrenda in the Library.

Vallejo Center Update

Over the past couple of months, the Vallejo Center’s Bill Thurston Building has been buzzing with activity.

Our grand re-opening took place, we had a foundation mixer on September 1st, we had the Red Cross Safety Training on Sept. 12th, brought to us with the help of SCC Public Safety Chief Brian Travis.

SCC students are diligently concentrating in the classrooms, we've had events happening in the lobby and courtyard, a cultural gathering taking place while students take a break from class.

Every day brings something different that helps build a better future for our students and the Center’s community.

Library Update | Digital Collection

The library has almost two million ebooks in our digital collection! When COVID closed our doors, we doubled down on filling our digital collections across the curriculum and now that everyone is used to the convenience of anytime/anywhere access, the Library plans to continue augmenting this valuable collection. Our ebooks can be used on or off campus, embedded in your Canvas shells, or shared as links. (There are some limitations here and there, so please get in touch if you have questions or encounter any hiccups.) And we are always excited to receive requests and suggestions, so if there’s a non-textbook title that you’d like available to your students, please let us know! Click on the “ebooks” tab from our homepage to search our ebook collections directly.

The esteemed and decorated Speech & Debate team (picture below) visited the library this week to have some fun in the Hamster Wheel – students love this space and we love having them here!
