World Olive Tree Day – 26 November
World Olive Tree Day was proclaimed at the UNESCO General Conference in 2019 and takes place on 26 November every year.
The day recognizes that the olive tree, specifically the olive branch, holds an important place in our minds. Since ancient times it has symbolized peace, wisdom and harmony, and as such is important to people and communities around the world.
UNESCO encourages everyone to join in World Olive Tree Day: celebrate with your farmers market or farm shop customers, hug a tree or two in your grove, or post a tweet or info on social media. Whatever you do, use the day to spread the word about the noble olive tree and its amazing, health-giving products.

What began as a crack in the bitumen has now totally eroded a large section of Gooramadda Road. (Supplied: Indigo Shire Council)
A road collapse caused by floodwaters in north-east Victoria has cut a regional road in two. Gooramadda Road, just outside Rutherglen, has been closed for the past two weeks after a large chunk of the road washed away.
Their grove is okay but the road closure means Gooramadda Olives are missing out on the usual pre-Xmas tourist boost at their farm shop. Hope it’s fixed soon, Melanie and Rob!

Victorian winemakers are fighting to keep the use of the prosecco name. (Supplied: Aleisha Kalina via Unsplash)
Wine makers from Victoria's King Valley travelled to Canberra on Tuesday to lobby parliamentarians to protect their use of the prosecco grape variety name. Australian winemakers are "not giving any ground" against the European Union, which does not want exporters to sell foods trademarked under geographical indicators as a condition in Australia's free trade deal.
We’re also awaiting the outcome of the FTA around the use of ‘Kalamata’.

Guide to soil testing and interpretation
A soil test, combined with a visual soil assessment, and knowledge about paddock history and production plans, provides a sound basis for a nutrition program. A conventional soil test can provide some information about biological and physical soil properties, while a complete soil condition assessment covers physical, biological and chemical soil properties of the topsoil and subsoil.
This resource aims to help growers and agronomists interpret conventional ‘chemical’ soil tests and identify soil chemical constraints for commercial crop production in Australia. It can also be used to guide site specific decisions on nutrition management.
While created for vegetable producers, the information is also relevant and useful to other horticultural crop producers.
Access the guide here.

Following the smallest olive harvest in Gloria Ferrer’s history, 2022’s harvest “snuck up on us” and obliterated all expectations, said vineyard manager Brad Kurtz. In 2021, the yield was dismal, with just 1.9 tons of olives harvested from the Arnold Drive property. But this year, Kurtz’s team picked and plumed their way through 15 tons of olives from Gloria Ferrer’s onsite grove.
Good news for (some, at least) US growers in an otherwise generally difficult year for our industry, while elsewhere in the Nothern Hemisphere …
