Music Sunday: Hallelu Yah!

Sunday, April 28, 2024 - 10:00 a.m.

The Music Ministry is thrilled to present Hallelu Yah this Sunday. Each musical offering depicts an act of praise (Hallelu) to God (Yah or Yahweh). Please join us this Sunday as Chancel Choir, WE, Union Bells, Cantate, and two of our gifted young musicians on violin and clarinet lead us in Music Sunday worship!

Chancel choir will be presenting an inspired work by Dan Forrest called “Hallelu Yah." Dan Forrest set these three pieces based on the Psalm 147, 148, and 150. His inspiration for these settings came from seeing the common word "hallelujah" transliterated more clearly "hallelu Yah", i.e. "praise YHWH"; these two words are an imperative (praise!) and the object of that praise (Yah, or Yahweh, the reverential Hebrew name of God). This opened up possibilities for both communicated meanings and speech accents.

The last five Psalms all begin and end with "Hallelu Yah," and thus my settings of these three do the same.

The first movement sets portions of Psalm 148 about creation voicing God's praise, and weaves quotes of a related hymn tune throughout. Movement 2 turns its focus to people raising their voices alongside nature (from Psalm 147) and hints at the Psalmist's harp in its accompaniment. The third and final movement sets Psalm 150 as a dance in compound meter, with its well-known list of instruments joining in praise along with "everything that has breath".

Please join us this Sunday at 10:00 a.m., in person or on our livestream. (And psst...there is no sermon this Sunday - not sayin', just sayin'.)

9:00 Worship

In the Chapel

This family-friendly service embraces the busy energy of young children. It is held every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in our Chapel with wonderful live guitar or piano music. And if you're running late - that's ok! Who actually gets places on time with kids in tow? Like God, we give grace. We embrace movement and busy curious little minds at this service that lasts 25-30 minutes. While it is designed as a teaching opportunity and introduction to Christian worship for young children, we welcome anyone of any age or family stage.

Stained Glass Windows

Come Celebrate the New Stained Glass Windows!

This Sunday, April 28, celebration and presentation following the 10:00 service

“Make a Joyful Noise unto the Lord”

As of Monday, our new wooden frames have been installed over the doors between the Sanctuary and Gathering Place and the crew of experts began placing the gorgeous new panels of stained glass on Tuesday! The weather has cooperated so far and we are hoping for more of the same as their work continues this week. If all goes as planned, we will be celebrating these new windows this Sunday! Following the 10:00 a.m. service, committee leaders David Hess and Kris Lang will offer brief comments about the history and artistic process of bringing these beautiful new windows to life.

Come join us as we welcome this finishing touch to a Sanctuary whose other windows date back to 1917-1938 and still provide spectacular color and inspiration in our key worship space!
