The Arts and Cultural Alliance of Newport County’s Arts Around the Fire will take place Wednesday, February 21, from 6:00-8:00p.m. Our guests will be Rose Island's Executive Director Sean O'Connor and board member Jen Thrum to let you know about the 2nd Annual Rose Island Artist Residency.
The Rose Island Lighthouse & Fort Hamilton Trust work to preserve the historic and environmental integrity of Rose Island. The Artist Residency is an opportunity for Rhode Island based artists whose work may be uniquely inspired by the environment and/or history of Rose Island to stay on the island. Join us to learn more.
Arts Around the Fire is an opportunity for artists, writers, performers and audiences to engage with colleagues about events affecting the cultural community and learn about new ideas and good work being done. Sign up for an artist membership or become a supporting member of the Alliance, a coalition of individuals and non-profits committed to the advancement of arts and culture in Newport County.

NEWPORT STRING PROJECT
Newport County Concert Series celebrates music of Latin America

The Newport String Project presents the third installment of its Newport County Concert Series on Saturday, February 3rd at the Jamestown Arts Center, and Sunday, February 4th at Trinity Church, featuring its resident ensemble, the Newport String Quartet, performing works by Still, Frank, De Elías & D’Rivera.
This event will feature vibrant chamber music from Spanish-speaking regions of the globe. From a musical homage to Don Quixote to a rarely heard Mexican masterpiece, Panamanian dances to a Cuban huapango, audiences won’t want to miss this celebration of Latin America.

Touro Synagogue will hold an open house on Sunday, February 18, between 10 am and 2 pm as part of the 36th Annual Newport Winter Festival schedule of events.

Explore multi-media exhibits about Newport’s colonial Jewish community and the origins of religious freedom in the United States and step inside Touro Synagogue, one of the most architecturally distinguished buildings of 18th century America. | |

ACA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: TALEEN BATALIAN,
Member of the ACA since March 2020
| |
Taleen Batalian draws inspiration from her imagination, rich cultural heritage, and the legacies of trauma within her family, survivors of the Armenian genocide.
Through drawing, painting, and printmaking, Batalian explores specific places related to the body, memory, and geographic locations. Additionally, Batalian works with textiles, utilizing fabric scraps and old clothing from family and friends that come together to create tapestries and sculptural garments that articulate her own mangled unexpressed feelings, as well as those who have passed materials down to her.
Taleen has received grants from RISCA, Providence Art Culture + Tourism (ACT), and The Arts and Cultural Alliance of Newport County.
She also serves as a Visiting Artist at various institutions, including Providence College,
Wheaton College, and the Newport Art Museum.

Lecture: “The Boston Strong Boy”- America’s First Irish American Hero

Join members and friends of the Museum of Newport Irish History for the 4th presentation of its 22nd Annual Lecture Series with Christopher Klein, whose talk is titled: John L. Sullivan, "The Boston Strong Boy": America's First Irish American Hero.

Born in Boston’s South End to Irish-immigrant parents, heavyweight boxing champion John Lawrence Sullivan (1858-1918) was the first American athlete to earn over one million dollars, the first American sports “superstar,” and an Irish-American hero during the Gilded Age. | | |
Klein’s illustrated lecture, based on his book, “Strong Boy,” will include a plethora of historical photographs from this colorful era in American history.
The lecture is made possible by a gift from Margaret A. Murray in memory of her husband, Vincent J. Murray.
No fee, but reservations are required.

OVERLAP, an artist-run contemporary arts space, RI will host “Counterpoint”, a collaborative exhibition showcasing the works of Rhode Island based artists Taleen Batalian and Francoise McAree.
The show features individual pieces by each artist, in conversation and contrast with one another, across a spectrum of materials and techniques including textiles, printmaking, paper-making, sculpture, and painting.
OVERLAP is open weekly Wednesday- Friday 11am-6pm and Saturday 12-4pm.
