Hello FAEA Friends,
October is here, and our Annual Conference in St. Petersburg is just around the corner. As we prepare to gather, my heart is with each of you, especially those who have experienced loss and hardship due to the recent hurricanes. I, too, have been impacted and find myself torn—there is a deep desire to be honest and open with you all. I vacillate between understanding that some of us need to be surrounded by our people right now, finding comfort in community, and recognizing that others may need a different path to healing.
I can only speak my truth into the universe and hope you know there is no perfect answer except for the one that feels right for you. Whether you choose to join us at the conference or take the time you need for yourself, your choice is valid. We are here to support you, no matter where you are in your journey.
Things I plan to do during Conference:
-
Lark Keeler reminded me to take Mindfulness Breaks and ask for help: In between sessions, find a quiet spot to breathe and reflect on what you’ve experienced. This will help you stay grounded and absorb what you need.
-
Val Anderson reminded me how much ART can heal. Find your Artful Moments: As you visit galleries and exhibitions, approach each piece with mindfulness. Take your time to experience the art, letting it inspire and refill you.
-
Josh Bula reminded me to be flexible: The impact of the recent storms means that some changes in session locations and availability may be necessary as we adjust to evolving circumstances. We’re ready to pivot, and we appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we do our best to accommodate everyone’s needs. As we all figure out the impact on our attendance, rest assured that our priority is to create a supportive and enriching experience for all.
-
SO many others reminded me what a gift it is to be able to support each other: In light of the hurricanes, we’re expanding the Big Giveaway—usually reserved for teachers in their first three years—to include any teachers affected by the storms. If you can, please bring funds, gift cards, and/or supplies to help support our members in need. Reach out to Debi Barrett-Hayes the Retiree Representative (retirees@board.faea.org). Together, we can ensure that those who have been impacted can find the resources and encouragement they deserve.
-
Watching all of the people connecting through email, text, social media, etc. have reminded me the importance of connections: Be sure to connect with fellow educators you meet at the conference. Reach out afterward to continue those conversations and strengthen our smaller FAEA communities. What we do together is about so much more!
As an aside, we’ve added a special time slot for those affected by the storm to come together, share experiences, and find support in each other in the Artful Happenings Room. Don’t miss out on this space designed for ongoing learning, meaningful discussions, and spontaneous collaborations.
Together, we are truly STRONGER. No matter the path you choose, we remain united in our shared passion for art education and in our commitment to lifting each other up during these challenging times.
Warm regards,
Latonya Hicks
FAEA President
