Academic Affairs Utilizes Electronic Gaming Strategies to Enhance Learning

This fall, Texas College is piloting courses that will utilize gamification in e-learning. This allows learners to engage, participate, and learn in a fun and interesting environment to achieve learning objectives with substantial learner engagement. The courses will focus on creating niche blended learning experiences with e-learning, training methods, and gamification. The unique set of e-learning games are developed and inculcates a competitive edge by stimulating active participation in course work. Proven benefits of gamification courses are highly customized to suit a learner’s needs, give a personalized touch, increase knowledge and retention. Additionally, the courses are designed to make acclimation effective and powerful with micro-learning courses integrated with gamification for impactful learning.

The four courses that have been introduced for the Fall 2022 semester are E-Sports Introduction, E-Sports Coaching, How to be an Active Listener, and E-Sports Critical Thinking. The courses will be accessed by students through a course portal managed by Aperion Global Institute (AGI). AGI is well known for their unique digital educational model of network affiliates that have a direct focus on “Erasing the Digital Divide in Education.” Their goals are accomplished by ensuring that the art of learning is accessible and integrated into a flexible and reliable cloud-based all-inclusive ‘technological multi-platform’ language e-learning system. AGI’s educational subject matter experts refer to the program as “Global Education Ambassador,” which has adopted a philosophy of commitment to driving transformation in education, self-improvement, communication, technology, and cooperation through a continuous learning mindset, delivering a first-class experience e-learning institute.

The Academic Affairs unit continues to work diligently to create a collaborative approach to student achievement between faculty and student services by forming an effective system of intervention to improve overall Texas College student retention and completion.

Texas Colleges Undertakes the

Renovation of D.R. Glass Library

The D.R. Glass Library undergoing renovation.

Renovations to the historic D.R. Glass Library (constructed in 1948) are currently underway. The library renovation project began in July 2022 and is scheduled for completion by the end of the Fall 2022 semester.

The D.R. Glass Library’s renovation will include:

  • Upgraded and handicap accessible restrooms.
  • State of the art lighting, electrical wiring, internet capabilities and accessibility.
  • A new roof.
  • An updated drainage system.

To address student needs for library services during the renovation process, Texas College placed several “library kiosks” throughout the campus. Students are able to access pertinent library data by use of these kiosks. Additionally, students also have the option to access library services online through the Texas College website (https://www.texascollege.edu/office-of-bracademic-affairs/library/).

In addition to other funding sources, Texas College is utilizing a $500,000 grant from the Historic Preservation Fund for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant program, funded and administered by the National Park Service within the Department of Interior, to pay for the D.R. Glass Library renovation project.

The Texas Juvenile Crime Prevention Center (TJCPC) at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) announced the launch of a new Texas Child and Family Study site in Tyler, Texas. The site, which opened on July 26, 2022, is the first site of the study; the next will be Dallas.

“After several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are thrilled that our Tyler site is up and running,” said Camille Gibson, Interim Dean of PVAMU’s College of Juvenile Justice and Executive Director of TJCPC. “Our regional sites for the Texas Child and Family initiative allow us to partner with Texas College and surrounding communities to help empower youth and families to work together to reduce juvenile delinquency in Texas.”

On several occasions, Program Director and Dr. Terrance Allen has visited the Texas College campus to build relationships with the Division of Business and Social Sciences to provide opportunities for students majoring in the areas of Criminal Justice and Social Work. Opportunities available to participate with the program were featured on September 7 during the College’s Weekly Academic Symposium.

The Texas Child and Family Study is a multilevel pilot project of the TJCPC. The project brings together community members across the state to assist children and families involved in or at risk of being involved in the juvenile justice system. The project combines research, practice, and community activism to create a path to success for youth in underserved and vulnerable communities.

“This project was developed to increase protective factors and reduce risk factors for youth vulnerable to the juvenile justice system,” said Susan Frazier-Kouassi, director of the TJCPC. “We are excited to be able to bring the project to the Tyler community, and we look forward to adding more locations in the near future.”

Dr. Jan Duncan, Vice President for Academic Affairs, was appointed as a member of the TJCPC Board of Directors. Regional direction for this effort is being led by PVAMU's Associate Director Dr. Grady Paris and Dr. Terrance Allen, who also serves as a research scientist at PVAMU.

The Texas College Choir Resoundingly Returns

On Friday, August 19, at College Hill Missionary Baptist Church, music brought together an entire congregation. From wall to wall, over 1,000 individuals, supporters, and performers alike, were moved in a way that could only be described as incredible. In a myriad of voices, one feeling resonated above all – passion. As hands lifted to the skies in praise, one message was heard loud and clear: the Texas College Choir was back.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Texas College Choir has sought ways to make a comeback. Now, with the appointment of Charles Shaw, the Choir has been launched into a new direction. Shaw, bringing a wealth of experience as a gospel music promoter, was hired as Texas College’s Choir Director in January of 2022. With extensive experience in marketing and advertising, he plans to build up not only the Choir’s prominence in East Texas, but that of Texas College as well. To begin this journey, he started with “Bring Back the Choir.”

“Bring Back the Choir is not just an event, it’s a movement,” Shaw said. This introductory performance afforded a glimpse into what the future holds for the Texas College Choir, announcing and promoting to the public that exciting changes are coming.

The Texas College Choir is comprised of students of all classifications, and carries a strong mix of low, hearty bass accompanied by the crisp grace of soprano singers. In this performance, the audience audibly experienced these voices in full effect. In addition to their own performances, the Choir also backed up gospel performing artist Kelontae Gavin, a show of what the next generation truly has to offer.

“The next generation of musicians and singers are influenced and affected by something new, not something that is sitting still,” Shaw commented. “What’s to come will take the Texas College Choir to new heights.”
