Looking Ahead: Festival of Advent Lessons and Music
Plan to be with us for one of our beloved Advent traditions at Fourth Church, the Festival of Advent Lessons and Music, on Sunday, December 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Pastors and members of Fourth Church will read the scripture lessons of Advent, and Fourth Church's Children's, Youth, Chancel, and Morning Choirs will perform anthems of the season. Together we'll sing Advent hymns and anticipate the birth of Jesus Christ.

A reception hosted by Women at Fourth and featuring homemade cookies and hot cocoa will follow the service.

In this season of gratitude, we invite you to celebrate Thanksgiving with Fourth Church.

Thanksgiving Day Worship

Thanksgiving Day parking is available at a discounted rate at the 900 parking garage (enter at Rush or Walton). Please note, however, that the discount rate will not be the Sunday morning rate but will be the $17 holiday rate set by the garage.

The $17 parking vouchers for Thanksgiving Day can be purchased with cash or check at the church reception desk on Thanksgiving morning. There will then be no additional fee when validating your ticket at the garage upon exit after worship or the dinner.

Our information channels are full of election analysis. What do we do with that, and where do we go from here?

How, for instance, can we rebuild Americans’ faith in mediating institutions such as political parties, the media, and interest groups?

How might we call for civility and make space for strong disagreement?

Join us on Thursday evening, November 29 as we host one of our Michigan Avenue Forums to explore these questions with Robert Boatright. Dr. Boatright will bring his presentation “The Impact of the 2018 Election: Beachcombing after the Wave” and share insights from his work as professor of political science at Clark University and National Director of Research for the Institute on Civil Discourse.

Let us help you with your holiday shopping!

On Saturday, December 1 and Sunday, December 2 we will again be hosting a Fair Trade Gift Bazaar.

This annual bazaar features handcrafted merchandise, ranging from folk art to ceramics, textiles, baskets, jewelry, and more. A variety of vendors, including Ten Thousand Villages, will be on hand.

Groups in more than thirty countries benefit from the proceeds of this bazaar, making it possible for them to earn a fair wage for their labors and provide food, shelter, education, and health care for their families. Mark your calendar and come shop for a difference!

In Anderson Hall and Borwell Dining Room on—

Saturday, December 1
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Sunday, December 2
9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

And why not invite your friends and neighbors to join you on Saturday, December 1 between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., when we’ll also be hosting our Advent Open House in the Sanctuary, complete with live music and, in the Narthex, refreshments.

Give thanks for those who are special in your life and remember loved ones with contributions toward the purchase of Christmas flowers and garlands to decorate the Sanctuary.

A list of those remembered will be printed in the Christmas bulletin. (Contributions must be received by Sunday, December 9 in order for names to be included in the bulletin.)

As the weeks ahead become increasingly busy, Advent invites us to set aside time for daily personal prayer and reflection and to create space to prepare our hearts and lives to receive the gift that comes to us in the stable.

Our daily Advent devotions—which begin on Sunday, December 2—offer a resource for this meditative journey. To receive them daily by email , sign up online.

Devotions also will be posted daily on Facebook, on Twitter (@FourthChicago), and on our devotions web page. They will be available in a printed booklet in the literature racks at the church on December 2 as well.

This month we celebrate the fifth anniversary of Stephen Ministry at Fourth Church.

In the past five years we have trained twenty-nine Stephen Ministers and served more than seventy care receivers. We are grateful to all who give of their time and their gifts to make possible this one-to-one ministry of care and supportive listening for those who are experiencing life’s challenges.

We invite you to learn more about being paired with a Stephen Minister. We also welcome applications for our next Stephen Minister training course—a fifty-hour series that culminates in making a two-year commitment to serve as a Stephen Minister. That course will be offered during the day on weekdays in the spring.
Please join us in welcoming the newest members of the Fourth Church familythose who were received into Fourth Church membership this past Sunday:
