Opening Message

Hello Student Community!

“Try it on: Be open and be willing to “try on'' new ideas or ways of doing things that might not be familiar, entirely comfortable, or what you prefer.” You may recall this community agreement from Health and Social Behavior (W200G)? As teacher-learners, we had the opportunity to “try on'' new ideas and ways of doing things when we participated in UC Berkeley’s Teaching and Learning Conference 2024. Our teaching and learning talk, Creating Inclusive Online Learning Environments through Community Agreements, described how we introduce and develop community agreements, including in real time with Jamboard, as well as how we incorporate them into multiple course activities in our OOMPH courses. We discussed how we collectively practice- as co-learners with all of you!- our community agreements in forums, group projects, and synchronous discussions to not only shape our learning environment, but also how we show up and work in partnership with communities. In the spirit of co-learning and developing our own practice, we attended interactive teaching demonstrations and discussed inclusive teaching and learning practices with faculty, instructional designers, and teaching assistants from across campus. We learned, for example, about a range of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) features in bCourses, which our Instructional Design Team integrates in our courses, to create greater accessibility in STEM courses- that all students reported to have found helpful. A key takeaway for us was the commitment to innovation, cultural humility and proactiveness exhibited throughout the program: to rethink, reimagine and reframe how we teach, learn, assess, develop assignments, create classroom spaces, virtual and in-person, that center, uplift, and support students. As public health practitioners and given our charge as social change professionals, sharing in a collegial learning environment in our program and among a diverse group of educators, is integral to our mission, vision, and values as a program and our commitment to you. We look forward to continuing to learn and unlearn together!

In community,

Sarah, Julie, and Evan

More OOMPH Social Impact Innovators!

Rutendo “Rue” Ajayi, current OOMPH Interdisciplinary student, and Renee Clarke, DrPH Candidate, were awarded Social Impact Innovation grant funding for the initiative "Black Lactation Matters", a Social Impact Project dedicated to emphasizing the significance of breastfeeding within the Black/African American community. It's primary objective is to augment breastfeeding prevalence among Black populations while mitigating factors that potentially escalate maternal mortality and morbidity. The project sponsors ten doulas to become certified Lactation Education Counselors (LECs) through the University of California, San Diego. The subsequent phase of the initiative involves organizing a Community Baby Shower, aimed at delivering breastfeeding support alongside essential resources for pregnancy and the postpartum period.
