Unprecendented Support from You is Going to Lead to Unprecedented Support for Our Young Adults
Greetings!
At the close of each calendar year, hundreds of charitable organizations ask for your support. Hearts to Homes is among them, as we asked you to contribute to our Giving Tuesday and Annual Appeal which, combined, comprise one of our largest annual fundraising efforts.

This year, you answered our challenge like never before, donating an astounding $74,000! Your support is already being translated into sofas, pots and pans, towels, comforters and so much more, and is making the greatest impact on the lives of our recipients as they move into independent living.

The response for Giving Tuesday alone was extraordinary and showed us you believe in the impact of this global day of giving. A big part of the success of our Annual Appeal was due to the unprecedented utilization of matching gifts. Asking your company to match your commitment through their corporate giving program is having an amazing impact, as we are able to furnish apartments for several young adults in need with the combined power of those gifts. We could not be more thankful for your generosity and commitment.

In the last three months, we have been asked to furnish 59 apartments - a record! We could not provide this assistance without you! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your continued support.
Supportive Housing Referrals Show Growth
Do you know where youth in New York City live once they age out of foster care? Some young adults live in traditional affordable housing, while others move into something called supportive housing. Supportive housing is also affordable, but offers supportive social services in an environment that can allow a former foster youth to focus on the skills they need to live on their own or provide more permanent care. This kind of environment can be incredibly beneficial to certain individuals according to professionals at our referring partners Rising Ground and JCCA.

"This is a transitional housing, where these youth can have independence but also the support they need to grow into adults. It's great for many youths in many situations," said Dolinda Greaves, Housing Specialist at Rising Ground.

Maxene Stainrod, Director of LEAP at JCCA says, "I love supportive [housing]. I see what it's done for a number of our youth that have transitioned. I think that it affords the ability for them to come into adulthood at their own pace. They're not forced to maintain employment, because a lot of them are figuring it out...This is a pivotal point for them...it's a lot for them to adjust to, and they know they have that support just paces away from them. "

A Hearts to Homes fulfillment can look different if a recipient is living in supportive housing. Some supportive housing arrangements already include basic furniture, like a bed frame, sofa, and table and chairs. So, what does that mean if we also offer these items? It means that we help these individuals over time. Hearts to Homes provides them with all the necessities that are not already included in their living arrangement, like towels or cookware. Then, when they transition into a more traditional apartment without furniture, we can assist again by providing them with a loveseat, chair and coffee table. This allows us another opportunity to stay in touch with those who are referred for assistance.

How frequently is Hearts to Homes assisting youth in supportive housing? We have noticed an uptick in the number of youths going into this type of living. In the past, 1 out of every 10 Hearts to Homes requests was from a young adult moving into supportive housing. In the last couple of years, that number has increased to about 1 in 5. Greaves attributes most of this change to a growing number of new supportive housing developments, while Stainrod notes that JCCA is focusing on placing more youths in this type of housing because of the level of the support and services it provides.

In the end, your donations help young adults aging out of foster care who find many different types of housing and, frequently, makes a difference for them not just once, but across years.
Offering More Than Furnishings With
Our New Resources Page
We have an exciting development to announce about our website! After months of gathering links and sourcing information, we have unveiled our new Resources page for Hearts to Homes recipients and other individuals in need.

Though Hearts to Homes is primarily focused on furnishing the homes of youth aging out of foster care, we've noticed a need for guidance as the young adults we serve look to live independently for the first time in their lives. This interactive resources map tool offers links to agencies and organizations that can provide assistance broken down by the geographic areas that we cover - New York City, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Nassau and Suffolk counties. Resources span a variety of categories, covering educational, legal, parenting/family support, employment, health & wellness or other social services to help guide anyone who uses this page to find the support they may need.

You can check out the tool here, and if you have any suggestions for resources to add, please contact mtmccombe@heartstohomes.org.
Your generous contribution allows us to expand our reach to help more young adults as they age out of foster care. Your support helps lift someone up, giving them a safe and furnished home from which they can complete their education, build a career or raise their own family. Would you consider a donation today?

“The opportunity to be a part of someone’s grown-up start in life is a privilege, and I am grateful for it. These young adults have shown a maturity and a resilience that awes me, and Hearts to Homes makes it so easy to be a part of this joyful experience. I encourage everyone to look at the website and see the relief our young folks feel knowing that they have a home base all their own.”

Welcome to Two New Referring Partners
Hearts to Homes is pleased to announce two new referring partners – Lawyers For Children and The Jewish Board.

Lawyers For Children’s ACT Project provides legal and social work services to young people aging out of foster care, directing specialized attention, advocacy, and resources to this critically underserved population. Through the ACT Project, their clients achieve better educational outcomes, acquire job training, receive therapy and appropriate medical services, and get help developing meaningful connections to caring adults who can support them through their transition to adulthood and beyond.
The Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services strengthens families and communities throughout New York City by helping individuals of all backgrounds realize their potential and live as independently as possible.

The addition of these two agencies brings the number of H2H referring partners to twenty-seven.
