Dear Residents –

With Thanksgiving only 6 days away, it’s a good time for all of us to focus on what we have to be thankful for. With so much “noise” coming from our televisions, social media and other news outlets these days, it is easy for many of us to feel disheartened and to forget all the good things we have to be grateful for in our lives.

For me, I am thankful for my family and friends, who understand that as Town Supervisor it is part of the job to be at many events that take me away from time spent with them, and for knowing that I live in the best country in the world. So, consider turning off your television, computer and cell phone for just a little while and take a moment to consider all of the things that you have to be thankful for, starting with the fact that you too live in the greatest country in the world.

It should not be forgotten, however, that one of the reasons we live in such a great country is the sacrifices of our veterans, the brave men and women who fought to protect our freedoms. As a small token of our appreciation, this past weekend I was joined by Jim Dean and Jim Foley to hand out boxed lunches to our veterans. And, this Saturday, from 10 am to 12 pm at Town Hall, Orangetown will be giving away 65 Thanksgiving Dinners to our active military and veteran families. As there is a limited supply, preregistration and a veteran ID card is required for pickup.

With next week being a short week, be aware that the recycling and garbage pickup schedules may be different. For questions about your recycling schedule, call the Orangetown Highway Department at (845) 359-6500. For questions about garbage pickup schedules, call your private hauler.

This weekend I will once again be guest bartending to raise funds for a really wonderful cause, the 2023 Penguin Plunge children - Mae Cunningham of Pearl River, Dominick Meehan of Orangeburg, Cassidy Ulrich of West Nyack, and Daniel Stewart of Nyack. Please help support these kids on Sunday, November 20, at the Growler & Gill, 148 Route 59, Nanuet, NY. Come on Orangetown, let’s show these kids we care!

Have a great weekend. While it may be a bit cold at least it will be dry!

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

With many families traveling to spend time with loved ones during this Thanksgiving, it is important that we prepare our vehicles and ourselves as drivers for the trip. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has provided some tips to help you get to your destination.

Below are the cliff Notes to NHTSA’s tips. The link below will take you directly to their page.

Know your car – Before driving clear snow, ice, and dirt from windows, headlights, taillights back up camera etc. Check pressure in your tires and their tread depth. Make sure all lights are working, and check your cars fluids (Oil, antifreeze, windshield washer fluid etc.).

Stock your vehicle – Carry items in your vehicle you may need in an emergency. Consider bringing a snow shovel and ice scraper, jumper cables, blankets, a cell phone with charger, water, food, and any medications you may need for longer trips.

Plan your travel route – Check the weather, road conditions, and traffic before leaving. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Dealing with an auto accident caused by being in a rush and driving aggressively will delay your arrival to your destination even longer than staying calm and driving defensively.

Safe travels.
