New STUCO Members Elected

Congratulations to this semester's newly elected Student Council members! They are pictured here clockwise from back left: Wyatt, Deren, Charlotte, Travis (teacher advisor), Elise, Rori, Zoë and Miles.

Middle and high school candidates campaigned before the election, some with creative posters displaying slogans and qualifications, hoping to garner support. The student body then cast their votes at the poll on election day.

Two important items on STUCO's agenda are planning the fourth quarter activities and deciding on a service project. Everyone is looking forward to the positive impact STUCO will make on ASOP between now and the end of the year!

Award-Winning Meteorologist Visits ASOP

Cassie Wilson, an EMMY award-winning journalist and on-air meteorologist with local television station KSHB 41, recently visited Liz's Survey of Science Topics class. Cassie is a University of Kansas graduate with an M.S. in Atmospheric Science, and is no stranger to weather in Tornado Alley! She received the Kansas Association of Broadcasters award for her coverage of the tornado that hit Andover, KS, in 2022 — coverage that began while she was storm chasing.

Cassie talked about meteorology as a career both on and off the air, and shared that many meteorologists work in the aviation industry and in the government sector. She also gave the students advice on what college courses are required to be a meteorologist, and discussed the difficulty of the course load. At the end of her talk, Cassie used her access to computer models to do a forecast for Orlando, Florida, which the students found very interesting!

Middle School Attends Percy Jackson Musical

Middle school students went to the Coterie Theater at Crown Center last month to see “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical." They had been reading the book in English class. In this first book in the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series, 12-year-old and demigod Percy is accused of stealing Zeus' thunderbolt and must go on a quest to find it.

Afterwards it was lunch at the food court, and a photo op in front of this balloon arch in Kansas City Chiefs colors!

A look back at what our therapy dogs Elton and Abby were up to this past month. Hint: it involved lots of snuggling and some stolen tissue box shredding!

ASOP Benefits from Eagle Scout Project

A big "Thank you!" to Oliver, the older brother of ASOP student Charlotte, who used his Eagle Scout project to make improvements to the outside, back area of the school's building. Oliver is in Scouts BSA Troop 284 in Overland Park.

Oliver first did some landscape work with his crew last fall, and later transformed two outside pots with winter arrangements.

He then prepared an area in front of the north building for outdoor seating. This involved removing a large stump, building a picnic table, and mulching the space for the table. Just in time for our unusually warm February, the picnic table arrived, an umbrella was purchased, and staff and students were enjoying this additional option for sitting outside!
