Oct. 3 - 14: The ISU Employee Flu Clinic is being held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays in State Gym. No appointment or pre-registration is necessary.


Oct. 5 - Nov. 9: The six-part series, "Powerful Tools for Caregivers of Military Members and Veterans" takes place on Wednesdays via Zoom.


Oct. 6: Researchers considering submitting proposals to Iowa State's Presidential Interdisciplinary Research Initiative, the Presidential Interdisciplinary Research Seed Grant Program, the Presidential Cost-Sharing Program for Research Tools, Bridging the Divide, Bailey or Margaret B. Barry programs are encouraged to attend a lunch info session on Oct. 6 from noon to 1.


Oct. 7: The CHS Collaboration Cafe is held every Friday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom (23 MacKay Hall).

Oct. 12: CHS What I learned about ... building a team virtual webinar series featuring Evrim Baran and Sarah Francis - look for the meeting link shared with you via your Outlook calendar.


Oct. 15: The College of Human Sciences Helen LeBaron Hilton Fund proposals and the Heddleson Junior Faculty Grant applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 15. To apply, email a proposal and letter of support to Marsha Peterson at marshap@iastate.edu.


Oct. 17:The annual Normal Borlaug Lecture will feature 2022 World Food Prize Laureate, Cynthia Rosenzweig. The event also features the 19th Annual Norman Borlaug Lectureship Poster Competition from 7 to 8 p.m. Rosenzweig's lecture begins at 8 p.m. and the winners of the poster competition will be announced after the lecture. All events are held in the Memorial Union's Great Hall and South Ballroom.

Engaging with community members to enhance the academic success of African American youth

A team of Iowa State University researchers brought together African American adults and African American youth residing in Polk County for a series of study circles focused on listening to participants’ experiences and learning more about their educational goals, ideas and needs related to promoting academic success. Learn how their findings are already enhancing programs in Iowa.


NSF grant aimes to improve student outcomes in STEM fields

Introductory college physics courses can be a hurdle for students working toward a degree in a STEM discipline. A team of researchers aims to improve student outcomes by providing real-time, actionable data to instructors. School of Education assistant professor, Ben Van Dusen, is part of the team that received a $441,494 grant from the National Science Foundation. Read more


Horizon II research team part of $80 million federal grant

Alexis Campbell, director of Science Bound, is part of the Horizon II research team working on an $80 million federal grant to show how generating renewable natural gas from cover crops and prairie grass could give farmers a market-based motivation to use conservation practices that sequester carbon dioxide and improve water quality. Celebrate Green Dot Action Month - Submit a photo of your activity!

Throughout October, Green Dot Action Month is an opportunity to do proactive Green Dots that promote a safer campus for everyone. You can participate in a number of ways! Whether your team all wears green on the same day or discusses Green Dot at a staff meeting - we'd love to know! Take a photo of your activity and share it with Laurel Feakes (lefeakes@iastate.edu) to feature on CHS social media accounts throughout October.

Join students for a cookie-decorating workshop!

On Oct. 20 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the Culinary Science Club is hosting a Cookie Decorating Workshop open to students, faculty and staff. You'll learn royal icing techniques, decorate cookies and take them home with you. Registration is limited and the workshop fee is $30. The workshop will be held in 2379 Food Science (Culinary Discovery Lab).

Lunch hour workshops offered on personal finance

A series of free personal finance workshops for ISU Employees are being held by ISU Extension and Outreach. The courses are held on Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m., pre-registration is required by clicking on the session title below and participants can earn points in the Adventure2 well-being program.



The workshops are part of Financial Wellness at Work, a new effort led by EO in partnership with university human resources. For questions or to schedule workshops for your unit, contact EO financial educator Barb Wollan (HSEO), bwollan@iastate.edu or 515-832-9597. ISU employees also can request a face-to-face or virtual one-on-one consultation with Carolyn Steckelberg (HDFS), an EO accredited financial counselor. Email Steckelberg to schedule a consultation.
