An Open and Affirming Congregation
Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost

Welcoming Covenant
In the name of God and Jesus Christ, the Hingham Congregational Church welcomes all who seek to know and worship God, and invites everyone to join in our mission through participation and leadership of the congregation.
As a community of faith, we take seriously the biblical call to love God and our neighbors as ourselves, and recognize that, although we are many members, we are one.
❖ We celebrate the uniqueness of everyone.
❖ We rejoice in our diversity of views and understandings of our shared faith.
❖ We affirm relationships based on love, commitment, and mutual respect.
❖ As is stated in our by-laws, we strive for righteousness, justice and peace.
It is with this spirit and the love of God that we openly welcome all persons, inclusive of every race, ethnicity, class, age, gender, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, and inclusive of any others, to journey with us as we move forward with the work of this church in the world.

All: We will sing of courage and the strength of the Divine.

We believe in you, O God, Eternal Spirit,
God of our Savior Jesus Christ and Our God,
and to your deeds we testify:
You call the words into being,
create persons in your own image,
and set before each one the ways of life and death.
You seek in holy love to save all people from aimlessness
and sin.
You judge people and nations by your righteous will
declared through prophets and apostles.
In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and
risen Savior,
you have come to us
and shared our common lot,
conquering sin and death
and reconciling the word to yourself.
You bestow upon us your Holy Spirit,
creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ,
binding in covenant faithful people of all ages,
tongues, and races.
You call us into your church
to accept the cost and joy of discipleship,
to be your servants in the service of others,
to proclaim the gospel to all the world
and resist the powers of evil,
to share in Christ’s baptism and eat at his table,
to join him in his passion and victory.
You promise to all who trust you
forgiveness of sins and fullness of grace,
courage in the struggle for justice and peace,
your presence in trial and rejoicing,
and eternal life in your realm which has no end.

*Prayer of Confession (unison)
Forgiving God, may a flood of acceptance and love enter our lives and our congregation today. Forgive us, we pray, when we act out of frustration and alienation rather than patience, wisdom, and compassion. Wipe away our tears of despair and isolation and replace them with a song of joy and blessed community...
(silence)
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father* who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
*Please feel free to pray as you wish. We respect tradition — and we welcome images of the Divine that are diverse and inclusive.

Lamentations - The Deserted City
How lonely sits the city
that once was full of people!
How like a widow she has become,
she that was great among the nations!
She that was a princess among the provinces
has become a vassal.
She weeps bitterly in the night,
with tears on her cheeks;
among all her lovers
she has no one to comfort her;
all her friends have dealt treacherously with her,
they have become her enemies.
Judah has gone into exile with suffering
and hard servitude;
she lives now among the nations,
and finds no resting-place;
her pursuers have all overtaken her
in the midst of her distress.
The roads to Zion mourn,
for no one comes to the festivals;
all her gates are desolate,
her priests groan;
her young girls grieve,
and her lot is bitter.
Her foes have become the masters,
her enemies prosper,
because the Lord has made her suffer
for the multitude of her transgressions;
her children have gone away,
captives before the foe.
From daughter Zion has departed
all her majesty.
Her princes have become like stags
that find no pasture;
they fled without strength
before the pursuer.

Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether
|
Draw us in the Spirit's tether, for when humbly
in your name, two or three are met together,
you are in the midst of them; Alleluia!
Alleluia! Touch we now your garment's hem.
As disciples used to gather in the name of
Christ to sup, then with thanks to God the Giver,
break the bread and bless the cup, Alleluia!
Alleluia! So now bind our friendship up.
All our meals and all our living make us sacra
ments of you, that by caring, helping, giving,
we may be disciples true. Alleluia!
Alleluia! We may serve with faith anew.

Prayer of Thanksgiving
Thank you, God, for life in the Spirit of Jesus; for love that cannot
die; for peace the world cannot give; for joy in the company of
friends; for the glory of creation; for the mission of justice you have
made our own. Give us the gifts of this Holy meal: oneness of heart,
love for neighbors, forgiveness of enemies, the will to serve every
day, and life that never ends. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

Precious Lord, Take My Hand
|
Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand,
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
When my way grows drear, precious Lord, linger near,
when my life is almost gone,
Hear me cry, hear my call, hold my hand, lest I fall:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
When the shadows appear and the night draws near,
and the day is past and gone,
At the river I stand, guide my feet, hold my hand:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

Congregational Commissioning (in unison)
Brothers and sisters, may we leave this place of worship with
Christ’s spirit in our hearts. May we encourage the fainthearted:
help the weak; practice patience with all; seek to do good;
rejoice always; pray without ceasing and give thanks in all
circumstances. For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for us.
Praise be to God!
