From the Health Office
Hello Northwood Families,
I wanted to take a moment to remind families about the school’s procedures for sending in snacks for birthdays, or any other occasion. In particular, I want to emphasize the need and importance of discussing with the staff any food allergies or sensitivities BEFORE sending the item to school. Sending in items without discussing it first can lead to potentially unsafe situations for students. For students who are unable to eat whatever is sent in, they are left feeling excluded, which is unfair and frustrating. If parents can let staff know in advance, then staff can let parents of students with food allergies know to send in an alternative treat.
Some classrooms and grade levels have restrictions in place, which include not allowing outside food to be sent in. I strongly recommend this option to all families. School staff do many things to help students feel special on their birthday. If you would really like to send in something for your child to share, there are many non-food items that can be distributed at school and then sent home with students. Some suggestions include bubbles, fidgets, mini flashlights, pencils, erasers, slap bracelets, slime, or stickers. But again, sending something in is not necessary, because our teachers do a great job making the birthday child feel special.
Thank you,
Colleen Krochmal, RN, MSN
