MERCY ART DEPARTMENT UPDATES
|
|
A strong visual arts program is a longstanding tradition and point of pride at Mercy High School. Our gifted teachers guide students to creative outlets and prepare our young artists for college art programs and design careers. This past year, 22 Mercy art students received 34 regional Scholastic Art Awards and of these, four Mercy students won gold key awards (first place). Last summer in support of this excellent program, we began a renovation of classrooms S1 and S3 that serve as the major art studios. Phase I was a success, yet we still have some pressing needs on our wishlist for Phase II!

Summer 2022 Art Studio Improvements:
- Removal of old heavy cabinetry to open the room and provide more work space
- Installation of air conditioning, new ceilings and new LED lighting
- The new LED lighting includes spot lights to highlight still-life objects and student models
- Installation of new cabinets, counters, sinks and faucets
- Added new storage spaces for students’ art and supplies
- Fresh coat of wall paint
Art Studio Wishlist:
-
New flooring ($12,000) - the original tile is coming up in areas and has been patched with a different color tile for this school year
-
New pottery kiln ($4,500 each) - we need 2
-
New pottery wheel ($2,000 each) - 1 donated, we need 1 more

ATHLETICS LOCKER ROOM - PHASE II
|
|
Built in 1964, the Gym locker room was original to Mercy’s Farmington Hills campus. Thanks to generous donors, many of whom attended our annual Auction and raised their paddles in support of Principal’s Pick, the first phase is complete! Mercy Physical Education students and athletes are now enjoying new lockers, flooring, LED lighting, charging stations and mirrors. An amazing transformation!
Fundraising is progressing for Phase II, which we plan to complete summer of 2023. Phase two includes the shower area, new lockers and the addition of a new restroom that is handicap accessible.
