Thanks to the generosity of our donors and bidders, Communities in Bloom was able to raise $3,447 in its second annual virtual auction. The money raised will be used towards bursaries for post-secondary students focusing on green initiatives as well as other youth initiatives, workshops, seminars, articles and other educational content on the value of green spaces in society.
We will ensure that we continue to invest in students and green initiatives now and into the future, so we continue to enhance our environment.
We are overwhelmed and so thankful of your support!

At the request of our communities, we decided to continue with a colour theme for 2023. Next year's colour will be PURPLE, which is Pantone's Colour of the year. Purple has a variety of effects on the mind and body, including uplifting spirits, calming the mind, enhanced feelings of spirituality and encouraging imagination and creativity.
From lilacs to coneflowers, from coast to coast, let's paint the country purple next year!

Scotts Canada Limited launched the fourth edition of the Gro for Good program in January 2022. The program aims to keep the spirit of community and connection to nature alive in Canada by providing grants to deserving communities, schools and non-profit organizations seeking to develop sustainable gardens and green spaces.
Congratulations to the Intergenerational Garden, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Katzie, Seniors Network, Maple Ridge, BC who garnered the most votes in the social media contest to win an additional $2,500 grant.

Recognizing Stratford’s most enthusiastic gardener and promoter!
Stratford resident and gardener Bernie Van Herk has put so much time into his front yard that it’s turned into a community landmark.
A big "Festival City" sign, a miniature windmill and a Shakespeare statue surround a flower bed that is currently loaded with chrysanthemums, which Bernie laid out so the word “HOPE” will bloom as they flower into fall.
An annual tradition for Bernie is to donate his propagated hundreds of plants to local schools every Mothers' Day. However, that tradition had a setback in 2020 when those schools were closed due to the pandemic. He decided instead to donate his canna lilies to the City of Stratford, which planted them into various municipal gardens.
That’s around the time Bernie became an honorary member of Communities in Bloom, helping tend to the Ted Blowes Memorial Pollinator Peace Garden. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Hope Garden, donating 215 sunflowers to remember the Indigenous children from the residential school in Kamloops.
Every winter, Bernie propagates hundreds of plants in his home greenhouse including sunflowers and canna lilies, which he donates to city parks, to schools, to the Stratford farmers market, and to just about anyone who wants them.
“Bernie is a true champion for Stratford Communities in Bloom,” said Communities in Blooms judge Tina Liu, who met Bernie at his Stratford garden during her visit to the city. “He is an avid gardener and a dedicated volunteer who goes above and beyond to beautify the community. His home garden is exceptional, decorated with tons of flowers, artworks, and festive signs, showcasing amazing community spirit.”
During their various site visits around the City of Stratford, CiB judges Tina Liu and Bob Ivison met with Bernie Van Herk to check out his beautiful front yard, which has become a local landmark.
