PROJECTS in OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

FUNDING A SPEED BUMP - A petition for a speed bump at Seneca near Tyndall is nearing completion. The JPNA Traffic Advisory Committee has been hard at work obtaining the requisite number of signatures. The petition will then be submitted to the Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) for review and approval. Following that, it must be funded.

A FUND FOR THE GRANT ROAD MONUMENT SIGNS - The sign at Grant and Euclid is the beginning of monuments signs for our neighborhood along Grant Road as the Phase 5/6 Grant Road Project returns to our area. Tax deductible donations can be made to Friends of Jefferson Park, Inc. You may specify which project you wish to support. A receipt will be sent. See link at: http://www.jeffersonpark.info/donatedues.html

CELEBRATE 125 YEARS OF HISTORY IN JEFFERSON PARK. We plan to celebrate with a great day of family fun and a silent auction. Please help us with your donations of vintage, collectible, and art items. If everyone pitches in, the silent auction will happen! For preliminary plans, see: http://www.jeffersonpark.info/125-years.html

MAYOR AND COUNCIL APPROVE DECREASING SPEED ON MOUNTAIN - Based on advice from Department of Transportation and Mobility, the JPNA board recently voted to request a decrease in the speed limit on Mountain--from 30mph to 25mph. AND THEY ARE UP - SLOW DOWN - 25MPH ON MOUNTAIN! Pedestrian signs near Adams and Mabel were damaged and JP requested that they be replaced! More info about traffic mitigation efforts: http://www.jeffersonpark.info/traffic-issues.html

GRANT ROAD PROJECT UPDATE - those ugly ghost poles along Grant Phase 3/4: Project director told North Dodge Neighborhood the following:

"Looks like we are getting Telecommunications companies off the power poles and will be going to bid last part of May. It usually takes 3 months to award a construction contract putting start of construction sometime in September. After that, about 2 ½ years of construction." So for Phase 3/4 the timing looks like construction won't begin until September of 2023 and is now extended in duration for an additional year and not finishing up until March of 2026. Jefferson Park and the Central Segments are Phase 5/6 so it will be awhile!! (North Dodge Neighborhood e-news)

Reporting Traffic Violations - You can help!

In an effort to improve traffic safety on our roadways, the TPD Traffic Section has created a new program called Traffic Watch. It will streamline the process for the community to report dangerous driving behavior. Now, anyone can easily and quickly report dangerous, reckless, or any driving behavior that is putting our community at risk.

Traffic Watch went live on Wednesday March 29th, 2023 and allows community members to report illegal driving behaviors they observe occurring daily on our streets, without having to use the 911 system. However, the option of calling 9-1-1 is still available when an immediate response is needed (i.e., impaired driver).

A TPD motor officer will review each report and decide the most appropriate option: a citation, an arrest, or an educational courtesy letter. Community members should be reminded that using their cellphones while driving is dangerous and a violation of traffic laws. The program is not to be used to exact retribution against someone else. The goal of the program is to make our roads safer by using this community-based approach. Follow the link below for more information. You can also use the above QR code to access the website.

"Traffic Watch"

Neighborhood Watch How-To

Neighborhood Watch is a program of neighbors watching out for each other. The purpose of the Neighborhood Watch program is to create an alert neighborhood using simple crime prevention methods.

Neighborhood Watch has several advantages, including the fact that your neighbors know who you are, what type of car you drive, and who typically belongs at your residence. A patrol officer driving by your home might not recognize someone as a stranger in your yard, but an alert neighbor would. They could then call 9-1-1 to alert police of the suspicious activity.

Neighborhood Watch does not promote vigilantism, and members of Neighborhood Watch groups are never asked to put themselves in harm’s way to prevent crime. They only observe and report suspicious activities to the Police Department. This leaves the responsibility for confronting and apprehending criminals where it belongs—with Tucson police officers.

With an uptick of petty crime in the midtown area, your block may want to participate in Neighborhood Watch. For more, see https://www.tucsonaz.gov/police/neighborhood-watch.

Weeds That Stink?

BE A WEED WARRIOR AND REMOVE AND REPORT STINKNET:

We need to be aggressive in controlling Stinknet and remove AND report it immediately. If you remove it yourself, you should dig it out or hand pull it, but if you hand pull, you would want to wear gloves and might even consider a mask and bag the plants so the seeds are contained.

Pima County Recommends:

If you come across the plant, DO NOT:

  • Mow or Weedwhack the plant – This will not remove all of the roots and will leave seeds viable to germinate the following winter.
  • Burn the plant – This will increase the risk of wildfire and its highly caustic smoke creates a public health hazard.
  • Transplant or relocate the plant to other areas such as your home or different portions of the river.

DO

  • Use herbicides to kill the plant if it has not yet flowered.
  • Pull and bag the plant, making sure to remove the root system from the ground.
  • Wear gloves when handling the plant to avoid a possible rash.
  • Map where you’ve seen it at www.stinknet.org

It is important to report it also, because, in all likelihood, the seeds will have already spread to neighboring properties. Tucson Audubon Society has launched a website, stinknet.org, to help people identify the plants and understand the threat. The site includes a map of everywhere stinknet has been found so far in Arizona and an online form for reporting new sightings. You can also report stinknet on iNaturalist (inaturalist.org)
