About the Presenter: Salli Greene
Salli Greene began her herbal career with a cart in Quincy Marketplace in Boston in 1977 where she sold live plants and homemade products. The herbs were mostly culinary, but her herb source introduced her to those wonderful scented geraniums and they were quickly added. Herbs were always part of her garden plans. Living in the Boston area her friends always wondered why there were green things in their iced tea. But when they tasted the different mints they were thrilled.
Fast forward to 2001 when she moved back Sturbridge (she had been raised here). The home she and her husband purchased had a large yard, so she really went to town with her vegetable, flower and herb gardens. In 2004 she took a 10 month herbal class that introduced her to the world of medicinal herbs. It was a life changing experience. Nothing is more wonderful than making products for your family’s health. From there she studied in Belize with Rosita Arvega and with Rosemary Gladstar. She now teaches Rosemary's 10 month Herbal Apprenticeship.
In 2010, Salli opened Alternatives For Health Herbal Apothecary. It was initially in Brimfield but when a storefront in Sturbridge became available, Salli jumped on it. Her shop is located at 426 Main St. She carries dried bulk herbs, teas and bath products, herbal products and blends for health, essential oils, flower essences, homeopathy, supplies gifts and much more. She feels with this shop, her love of herbs has really come full circle. She enjoys being there and meeting with customers. She also does mail order of her products. If you don’t see something on the website, call the shop. She may just have it!!
The goal at Alternatives For Health Herbal Apothecary is to provide quality products and services to help you get and stay healthy. Salli’s greatest joy is to educate the consumer and have them make their own health products. There is an area dedicated to supplies, and recipes are available. There is also a library area where you can sit and do research. The products carried have been carefully chosen to be of the highest quality.

Oakholm Brewing Company
80 Lake Road, Brookfield, MA
413-272-9620
Meet us at Oakholm's Taproom for May Networking!
The taproom at Oakholm Brewing Company is a beautiful mortise and tenon timber framed hay barn constructed in the early 1900s. This historic barn has been completely renovated and a new timber framed addition has been added to maintain the classic look and create a large production area for the brewery. The team at Oakholm is excited to share their delicious beer, malted seltzers and sours with you, and show you the beauty of their stunning property!
Learn more about Oakholm Brewing Co. below and join your fellow Chamber Members for networking, cold drinks and FUN on May 15th!
ABOUT OUR HOSTS
After purchasing Oakholm Farm in February 2018, Chris “Babe” Predella asked his long-time employee Andrew Woodward for advice on utilizing an old barn as a tap room for Christmas Tree Sales in the winter. Andrew had been home brewing for over 7 years and his response was “you should put a brewery here.”
They both soon started making plans on renovating the hay barn to create a beautiful brewery. They knew they needed one more person to create a great partnership, and that person was Rick Predella, Babe’s Father. Rick’s background in engineering and operations management was the perfect addition to the partnership. After a two year journey, we were able to open in May 2020 to the public for can sales during the height of the pandemic. Since then, the taproom has been opened for indoor and outdoor seating with firepits and outside draft pours on warmer days.
Oakholm Brewing Company is situated on Oakholm Farm Estate’s land whose mission is to be a place of love, respect, fun, celebration, peace, & relaxation, nourishment for the soul, and a place where families come together. A place where people enter as strangers and leave as friends.

Second Chance Helping Dogs Rescued from the South Korean Meat Trade
Dogs Who Faced a Certain Death Ready a Second Chance
EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (April 7, 2023) – To look at one-year old Liam, an adorable Labrador retriever mix, you would be hard pressed to guess all that he’s been through in his short life. Liam eyes every visitor to the dog room at the Second Chance Animal Services Adoption Center and barks to make sure he’s got your attention. Liam is one of five dogs that Second Chance brought back from a Maryland rehabilitation center last month. They were part of a group of approximately 120 dogs rescued from the South Korean Meat Trade that were being cared for by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
“Second Chance has long partnered with the HSUS as an emergency placement partner and we are often called upon to help with cases like this,” said Second Chance CEO and Founder Sheryl Blancato. “South Korea is currently contemplating a dog meat ban and the farm where Liam and the other dogs came from is transitioning to growing cabbage and other crops through the Humane Society International/South Korea’s “Model for Change Program”. We are proud to work with the HSUS to give these dogs the best start at a new life.”
Wendy Hall, Second Chance’s Animal Relocation Director, says all five dogs are doing amazing. “They’ve obviously been through a lot in their short lives, but the dogs have made great progress. They were so shy when we first met them, and we have been in awe watching them get brave enough to explore our play yard and begin to come out of their shells.”
“Since they’ve never had the chance to be a dog, they will need patient families who can help with things like walking on leash who are ready to give them the great life they deserve,” added Hall.
Liam is currently available for adoption. Jackson, Star and Buttons are still at the nonprofit’s Almost Home facility in North Brookfield where shelter pets entering Massachusetts complete their state-mandated 48-hour quarantine and receive any care they may need before they are ready for adoption. “They are just waiting for kennel space to open up at the adoption center so they too can find their forever homes,” according to Hall who notes that the fifth pup is being fostered and she suspects he has already stolen his foster’s heart.
Those interested in adopting can find the available dogs’ bios on the Second Chance website: www.secondchanceanimals.org/adoptable-dogs/ or come visit during adoption hours: Monday through Friday – 10am to 3pm, Thursday evenings from 5 to 7pm and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm.
PHOTOS: (L) Seven-month-old Button will be available for adoption soon. One-year-old Liam who was rescued from the South Korean meat trade is ready to start the next chapter of his life. (C) Star exploring the Almost Home play yard. (R) Seven-month-old Button will be available for adoption soon.

SOUTHBRIDGE, MA (April 13, 2023) – Grooming is not just about making your furry family member look good. It can also play a vital role in their overall health and help prevent a wide range of issues that can affect their quality of life. Second Chance Animal Services is now offering dog grooming services at their Southbridge Community Veterinary Hospital, and they have begun to offer subsidized pricing for those that qualify.
Second Chance CEO and founder Sheryl Blancato says that while grooming needs vary by breed, grooming can be a very important part of keeping pets healthy. “Regular grooming helps remove loose hair, dirt, and debris from your dog's coat, preventing matting and tangles that can lead to skin irritation and infections. It also stimulates blood flow to the skin, promoting a healthy, shiny coat.”
Second Chance has taken in many long-haired shelter pets in dire need of grooming help according to Blancato. “The before and after photos are remarkable, but what really stands out to me is how grooming can bring out the spunk in so many pets. Grooming can also help prevent painful conditions like ingrown nails, ear infections, and dental problems and helps detect any unusual lumps, bumps, or skin changes that may indicate an underlying health issue. Catching these issues early on can help prevent more serious problems down the line.”
It's for the latter reasons that Second Chance added subsidized rates on grooming services to help pets live better lives. All Second Chance hospitals have been offering subsidized rates for veterinary care as part of their mission to keep pets in their homes and out of shelters. The nonprofit recently added grooming to their Southbridge educational hospital so Bay Path Vocational/Technical High School students in the veterinary science program could learn about grooming alongside experienced groomers. Hospital Director Shellina Meixner said she is thrilled to be able to offer affordable dog grooming. “We’ve also added walk in nail trims for only $10 during our grooming days.” Meixner added that dog owners must provide a valid rabies certificate for all grooming services.
Overall, regular dog grooming is a crucial part of pet care that should not be overlooked. Whether you do it yourself or take your pup to a professional groomer, the benefits are clear: a happy, healthy, and well-cared-for furry friend. Pet owners who would like to take advantage of Second Chance’s grooming services can call 774-318-1101 to schedule an appointment. Walk-in nail trims are also available Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8am to 4:30pm at the Southbridge vet hospital, 700 Worcester Street, Southbridge. For more information and pricing, visit www.secondchanceanimals.org/grooming/

COOKING WITH RICO - ROMAN CUISINE
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 2023 AT 6:30 PM
Roman cuisine is most loved for being exceedingly flavorful, simple, and satisfying. Continuing centuries of old-school traditions, dishes in the Italian capital have their roots in “poor man’s food”, constituting a creative cuisine that pays homage to the local delicacies in the Lazio region.
More than anywhere else in the country, pasta is a staple of Roman cuisine, and dishes such as spaghetti alla carbonara and pasta e ceci alla Romana, penne all'arrabbiata are typical of the city. Pork, cured meats, pizza, broad beans, peas, and artichokes are all common components in Roman cuisine.
Join Chef Rico as he explores some of the many dishes that have evolved from centuries of fusing local ingredients and flavors with culinary influences from the extensive lands Romans conquered in ancient times. This event is $59 per person with wine pairings, or $46 without. Tax and gratuity are not included.
Make your reservations now by calling Avellino at 508-347-2321.
