CID's Online Voter Turnout Tool
|
|
In 2020, CID debuted the first-of-its-kind online Voter Turnout Tool that allowed residents, community organizations, and media in Los Angeles County to track daily and hourly voting participation during the general election voting period, as well as identify low turnout neighborhoods for more targeted outreach.
CID rolled out that same tool for the state of Georgia in January 2021 for the special runoff election for the U.S. Senate.
As the midterm 2022 general election approaches, CID will again launch the Voter Turnout Tool, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC),for Los Angeles County. CID will also launch the tool for all counties within Georgia.
The tool allows users to track participation during the early voting period and through Election Day showing the unofficial number of ballots returned (or cast) based on voter participation data from the Los Angeles County RR/CC and Georgia Secretary of State's office. In addition, the tool enables users to map neighborhood demographic characteristics, as well as previous election turnout data to inform outreach and voter education efforts.
“Knowing which communities have high or low voter participation during the early voting period and through election day can be critical to getting out the vote,” said CID Director Mindy Romero. “CID’s online Voter Turnout Tool allows communities the opportunity to better track early voting, as well as plan non-partisan outreach neighborhood-by-neighborhood.”

The U.S House of Representatives has passed legislation to overhaul the rules for certifying the results of a presidential election. The Senate is moving on a similar track with comparable legislation.

Below is a selection of recent CID media coverage:
CID’s Mindy Romero comments on the notion that the U.S. Constitution and the geographic sorting of the country’s voters into liberal and conservative areas has created a disconnect between public opinion and election outcomes. “We’re in a very different world today than when the system was designed,” said Romero. “The dynamic of being pushed aside is more obvious and I think more frustrating.”
September 15 was International Democracy Day, a day set aside to focus on the state of democracies around the world. CID’s Mindy Romero joined Nancy Yap from the Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE) to discuss the topic with KPPC’s Air Talk’s Larry Mantle.
CID’s Romero comments about the fear often experienced by the formerly incarcerated when considering whether to vote. "They feel like by asking questions that they might even jeopardize their own freedom or own position within the system," she said. CID recently released a report highlighting the barriers that formerly incarcerated people often face.
Mindy Romero weighs in on the Los Angeles mayoral race between long-time politician Karen Bass and real estate developer Rick Caruso, who currently trails Bass in the polls. “He is for all intent and purposes the challenger,” said Romero. “He needs a very good showing or something to happen to really put him back in the race.”
