The Week of August 16 - 22, 2022

It’s so great to be back with St. George’s and St. Paul’s, after a once-in-a-lifetime vacation in Costa Rica.
There are many stories and reflections from my time away, but let me just share one story now. Our travel agent and Alleyne had included a zip line experience in the cloud forest of Monteverde as part of our trip. Ahead of time, Kennedy and I agreed we wanted to do this quintessential Costa Rican activity.
When we got to the place, and I saw the video introduction and realized we would be zipping high over the forest canopy for long distances on just a wire, I panicked a little. I am no great fan of heights, and somehow I had imagined a tamer experience than this, something where I would be able to see the ground, maybe.
As we rode up and up and up in the sky tram, I could feel my stomach drop. I was queasy as I was fastened to the line by our guide. I got into position and followed the instructions we had been given, and somehow made it to the other side. But when I got off that first run, knees shaking, and found out it was a “practice” run, and that there would be six more, higher up, I almost bailed.
The six runs actually turned out to be a grace, because with each one I gained confidence, I relaxed, and I started to truly enjoy the beautiful scenery below me. By the last run, I even gave out a hearty “Wheee!!!” as I sailed across. Our next activity was a sky walk with a nature guide, involving looking for creatures in the treetops from skinny suspension bridges that swung and shook when we walked across. After zip lining though, this was a piece of cake!
It showed me that I can always open myself to new and surprising experiences, that I can always challenge and stretch myself to try the thing that makes me afraid. I saw Alleyne’s mom do the same, as she delighted in finding out she could navigate a kayak with Kennedy, something she had never tried before.
When we move past our fears, as individuals and as communities, amazing things can happen. Here’s to more of that for all of us, for our church communities, and for the world!

Sadly for us, the time for Deacon Julett to move on in her ministry has come. Her covenant was extended last year for one more year to help with transitioning to a new priest. Now, that year is up. Deacon Julett will be exploring ministries on the other side of the river, in the Ellenville area.
As is fitting, her last acts with us were bringing take-out dinners from Outback to people who could not physically get to the event, and gathering materials for the Rural and Migrant Ministries school supplies drive.
All of us at St. Paul's wish you well, Julett, and we send you forward with our love.

ALL AGES BOOK READ
PAULI MURRAY:
SHOUTING FOR THE RIGHTS OF ALL PEOPLE (DEBORAH NELSON LINCK)
|
|
This fall, we will be reading this book, about an attorney, writer, activist, priest, and saint in The Episcopal Church. Pauli Murray was all that and more, and her life can teach us about ourselves, and inspire us in our work in these present, difficult times.
This new book from Church Publishing is for young readers, but the content is very adult. For many of us who are unfamiliar with Pauli Murray, it’s a great introduction.
We will plan to have a time to reflect on the book at our own church, and then gather sometime in the fall for a multi-church retreat with others reading the book. Hopefully we will have enough young people to have a separate youth breakout group at that retreat.
For those wanting more content on Pauli, there is also an Amazon Prime documentary available. If there’s enough interest, we could schedule a watch party.
Look for more information on specifics like dates, but in the meantime, feel free to order the book and start reading!

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH
For families with youth up through the first year of college, here are two opportunities you might consider for this summer. The first is led by the wonderful Christy Lent, from Christ Church, who some of you might know, and is at Incarnation Camp, a beautiful setting not too far away in Connecticut. It is great for building friendships and developing leadership skills. The second will be led by the anti-racism committee, led by Carla Burns of Holy Innocents Church in Highland Falls. Most likely many of you know Carla too, and she is a wonderful mentor of young people.
1. The Diocese has a Summer Youth Conference, at Incarnation Camp in Connecticut. It's a great campsite, and I have heard wonderful things about the program itself. The brochure is here.
2. The Diocese anti-racism committee is planning a youth pilgrimage:
Youth (New York State) Pilgrimage, Aug 27-28
Age Group: Teenagers ranging from entering high school to recent high school graduates
This year the Anti Racism Committee is hosting a two day pilgrimage within New York State
in lieu of the Jonathan Daniels Civil Rights Youth Pilgrimage. Limited to two participants per church.
(More detailed information to come)
Please get in touch with Rev. Mary if you have questions about either of these.

NEW Regional EFM Group
We are planning a new Education for Ministry cohort for either the Fall of 2022 or January of 2023.
The intention is for this group to meet on-line as well as occasionally in-person.
Alison Quinn and Heather Sisk are currently in organizational discussions with Deacon Teri Jones.
We need at least six participants to start a new group.
Please contact Heather if you have interested parishioners.
Thanks and Peace,
