Although it may be the shortest month of the year, February is filled with plenty of moments to celebrate. From learning about important accomplishments for Black History Month to celebrating different forms of love on Valentine's Day, we have plenty going on here at The Station. But for “America’s greatest holiday” proclaimed by some, Super Bowl Sunday filled The Station with joy and excitement as we geared up for one of the biggest parties of the year.
We were disappointed that our Baltimore Ravens just missed the big event but that did not stop our clients from making the most of the day and celebrating together. Here at The Baltimore Station, we have used this sports celebration as an opportunity to impart new skills to our veterans. For the past 11 years, our Assistant Clinical Director Paul Martin, with support from the client-led Super Bowl Committee, has put together the most exciting event of the year that keeps the men involved and engaged for weeks leading up to the big game.
Clients raise money to host their own Super Bowl party filled with the best food in town. A menu consisting of grilled steaks, steamed shrimp, baked potatoes and more is planned by the clients. We go all out and with the help from community donations and volunteers, we made this day extra special for each individual in our program. Our kitchen team even enjoyed the day off, leaving the men in charge of prepping, cooking, cleaning up and enjoying the delicious feast.
Staying on a path of recovery from drugs and alcohol can be difficult, but when you focus on food and fellowship, a sober celebration can be the highlight of the year!
