The Elk Rapids Strategic Vision as presented on November 28, 2022

OUR STORY The history of our community is almost as old as the country itself. What began as a port became a designed resort community. The location and growth of industries grew the population to almost 3,000 by 1900. The village served as the commercial center, with people from across the region drawn to the hotels and shops lining River Street. >>Read Strategic Vision

Meet Ryan Blanck, CEO of Deviate and our guest speaker at the upcoming Leadership Roundtable on December 13, 2022, at 2:30 pm.

Ryan is an expert facilitator with a gift for bringing out the best in people. Currently, he is the performance coach for high-capacity leaders around the world. He delivers coaching and experiences in partnership with the National Football League, within championship-winning football programs like the Philadelphia Eagles, Clemson University, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, and Western Michigan University, and with the iconic music industry agency William Morris Endeavor.

The short story is about Ryan's program, which is best described as a large group coaching session and is the foundation of how they grow their client’s culture as the company scales. It's called the Psychology of Leadership: Are You Worth Following? and it's all about getting teams to communicate their needs and become solutions-focused. He teaches what it means (the mindset) and what it takes (the Guiding Principles) to be a leader worth following.

SURVEY ASKS NORTHWEST MICHIGAN RESIDENTS FOR INPUT ON RECYCLING SERVICES

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Residents in Northwest Lower Michigan are being asked to provide their input on recycling access and infrastructure. The online survey will help to identify gaps and inform improvements residents would like to see in the future.

The survey is funded through a grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to help counties understand current material management deficiencies and highlight opportunities for improvement. Networks Northwest, a non-government organization facilitating various programs to build stronger communities in Northwest Michigan, is managing the survey effort.

"As the state pivots from ensuring landfill capacity and toward increasing sustainable materials management, it is important to gather feedback from residents," said Mathew Cooke, Community Planner with Networks Northwest. "Understanding the current recycling situation will help to identify the gaps that need to be filled to increase recycling and material recovery in Northwest Michigan."

The Northwest Michigan counties participating in the survey include Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, and Wexford.

Residents are asked to complete the survey by December 22, 2022. Link to the survey: https://resourcerecycling.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3RkCnjt88HHCi7s

LEGACY OF AN ARTIST IS A TRUE GIFT FOR ALL

“Gift of a Lifetime” Exhibit - December 9 - 31, 2022

We all think about the existential question of how we will be remembered when our life comes to an end. For artists, especially visual artists, legacy is a reward inherent in their profession. Their work continues to give joy, expound beauty, enhance aesthetics, lead us to introspection, inspire our own creativity, and release our emotions long after the artist has passed. The late local artist, Joani Braun, was keen to the spirit of giving gifts—often spontaneous and quirky but always from the heart—long before her passing last December. >>Read More

Come celebrate winter with local professional skier Mike King to watch the hometown debut of his Film Lake Effect. Lake Effect is a two-year ski film project highlighting the joys of backyard adventure, and the shifting perspective of Mike, who for a decade has only sought adventure from the peaks of mountain tops in the far reaches of the west. In 2020 when Covid encouraged lockdowns & travel restrictions, Mike's life on the road came to a screeching halt. This abrupt change inspired Mike to take the hurdle as an opportunity to reconnect with the unique, untapped terrain, ski culture, and the people that were thriving right here in his home state of Michigan. Throughout filming Lake Effect Mike realized you don't need to travel far to have an epic adventure. Rather some creativity, curiosity, and the willingness to just walk out the door to the abundance that starts right in our backyards.

The night will be one to remember, there will be product giveaways, poster signing, and a guest video showing from the local skiers at Holiday. We hope to see you there!

Participants will get familiar with the tools and equipment used in fly tying. You will learn about hooks, thread, and materials used for flies. Eric will teach how to properly proportion a fly. You will learn a variety of basic techniques that are essential to becoming a great fly tier. Experienced fly tiers will learn a few new tips and techniques that will help their own tying. Michigan has a long history of trout, fly fishing, and conservation. Eric will teach participants three different flies and information about each fly.

Join us for a celebration of all things Pokémon! Make Pokémon themed crafts, meet fellow trainers and try your hand at a card game battle. This event is best for those ages 8+.

Stations will be set up with Pokémon crafts, games, and activities.

Don't have Pokémon cards or don't know how to play? Don't worry- a love of Pokémon is all that's required to attend.

If you'd like to bring your card collections- feel free!
