What advice do you have for future Native college students?

Do whatever it takes to stay connected to the reasons that made you want to pursue education in the first place. While it can be easy to get lost in the rigor of exam cycles and extracurriculars, it's important to stay rooted in community and family. These connections support us through the difficult but rewarding path of education.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love running, beading, and calling my family back home.

How do you want to use your UCSD degree after graduation?

I hope to advance the health of our American Indian and Alaska Native relations by collaborating with Indigenous communities to provide direct care and conduct health-promoting research as a physician-scientist and tribal citizen. Along the way, I hope to assist other Indigenous scholars in their aspirations to become health professionals and researchers.

What We've Been Up To

Our first event for Native American Heritage Month was our Kickoff Luncheon, which featured Soaring Eagles Dance Group and Green River Drum, as well as our Keynote Speaker, Miss Kumeyaay Nation Priscilla Ortiz-LaChappa (Iipay nation of Santa Ysabel). It was a huge success as departments from UCSD, fellow Resource Centers, and Native students gathered to eat Three Sisters Stew and Indian Tacos, Frybread courtesy of a local Kumeyaay Native vendor.

On Nov. 7th 2022, the ITRC, in collaboration with UC San Diego's Admissions Office, hosted UC Native Insights, a workshop on the UC Insights application questions for students applying to UC San Diego. If you or someone you know is interested in attending UCSD and could not attend this event, reach out to the ITRC via email!

On Nov. 10th, the ITRC had a film showing of "More Than Frybread" at the Loft. Students came out to watch this comedy directed by Travis Holt Hamilton and got some good laughs in.

On Nov. 16th, 2022 as part of our NAHM Events, the ITRC streamed the documentary "Black Indians An American Story" as a part of our Black Indigenous Voices Series, which is pictured above. We had an excellent turnout as students and faculty alike followed up the documentary with a powerful discussion. If you couldn't attend and are still interested in watching the documentary, click here!

Bishop Indian Center students came for a "Native Tours" Campus Visit on Nov. 19th, 2022 to explore what UCSD has to offer as well as learning more about the ITRC and the services and programming we provide.
