Come for Fellowship

and

Come to Support Beth and Chuck Blaylock

Beth and Chuck are members of Trinity. This is Beth's story.

Wednesday, March 16th, 2022, Beth suffered a stroke that left her without use of her right (dominant) arm and hand. Born with Spina Bifida, she also does not have use of her legs. Beth was making some progress in recovery, but persistent and severe bedsores have kept her from continuing therapy and delayed her returning to work, resulting in the loss of her health insurance.

Trinity, with the help of ECW (Episcopal Church Women), are hoping to raise $6900 to help Beth continue to make the payments on her accessible van for a six month period and pay the outstanding medical expenses that cannot be negotiated into payment plans. Without help, Beth and Chuck fear losing their home, which has been renovated for Beth's special needs.

We hope and pray that over the next six months Beth's bedsores will heal, her therapy can resume, and she can return to work.

How can you help?

  • Attend the Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, October 16, at 4:30 PM

Music Written

Out of Grief:

The Hymn Tune "Michael"

by Herbert Howells

This past Sunday morning, for the closing hymn we sang “All My Hope on God is Founded” by the English composer Herbert Howells. This hymn was recently sung at the committal service of Queen Elizabeth II, and I wanted to give some background information about the meaning of the music that was written for this text.

Howells had one son named Michael and one daughter named Ursula. Sadly, Michael contracted polio and died at the age of nine in 1935. Howells was overcome with grief at the loss of his son and most of his subsequent musical output was influenced by this grief for the rest of his life.

Out of the many pieces of music that Howells composed after the death of his son, the hymn tune for “All My Hope on God is Founded” is the most widely known piece written out of his sense of loss. The text was translated from the German by the poet Robert Bridges, and the tune was originally titled “A Hymn Tune for Charterhouse” but was renamed Michael in 1936 by Howells in memory of his son.

Howells continued composing until his death at the age of 90, with much of his music influenced to some degree by his tremendous loss. There is a story behind most of our great hymns of the Church, but I find this one particularly moving.

On Enough and Abundance

Luke 17:5-10

The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" The Lord replied, "If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, `Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.

"Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, `Come here at once and take your place at the table'? Would you not rather say to him, `Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink'? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, `We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!'"

A little faith can go a long way when it is stewarded with disciplined practice. The disciples ask Jesus, “Increase our faith!” Jesus responds with two analogies that let them know they have more than enough faith if they will only put it into consistent practice. The problem seems to be that the disciples, like many of us in the 21st Century, have enough and abundance confused.

First, Jesus speaks of the ability of faith “the size of a mustard seed” to uproot trees and toss them into the sea, indicating that enough is enough. The disciples would know a tiny mustard seed germinates quickly and spreads aggressively, and left to mature the mustard plant will grow into a bush-like plant producing more seed, and so on. It doesn’t take an abundance; it just takes enough.

This also is true of stewardship, whether it is of one’s time, abilities, financial resources, or the blessings in the world around us. When we practice faithful stewardship of what we have and who we are, it germinates, grows, and multiplies within us, blessing others with the abundance of our lives in Christ.

Continued cultivation of faithful stewardship in our lives, bit by bit grows into stewardship of all that we have and all that we are because we more deeply are able to realize the abundance in our lives is more than enough, generating joyful generosity and gratitude.

Jesus’ story about the dutiful servant reminds his disciples, both of the 1st and 21st Centuries, that humility is at the root of faith and stewardship as a grateful response to blessings in one’s life. My wife and I found this to be true in our journey to tithing. Humility, coupled with disciplined faith that “All things come of thee, O Lord,” as we slowly made our way to giving 10% year by year, we began to understand that God has blessed us with abundance, even when we do what is expected of us (tithing) we found we have more than enough to live even more generously. It just took a little faith and humility to get us started.

Written by The Rev. Lance Ousley. Rev. Ousley is rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Houston, TX and is a former board member of TENS and believes faithful stewardship leads to a joyous life. While Lance was Canon for Stewardship and Development in the Diocese of Olympia (Seattle, WA), he authored Stewards Stirrings, a 3-year commentary on the lectionary texts focused on preaching and teaching stewardship

From the Diocesan

Standing Committee:

Nominating Committee Members Announced

September 20, 2022

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

For nearly a month, the Standing Committee has been engaged in the prayerful work of selecting the members of the Bishop Nominating Committee. From 26 applicants, all of whom offered considerable gifts and skills, we have selected a committee of 15 members, and have also appointed a chaplain. The group represents the rich diversity of our diocese, and we are grateful to each person who has agreed to serve. You can find the Nominating Committee’s roster on the new bishop search website, along with news updates, the timeline for the search, and other information about the process of seeking our next bishop.

We are also glad to announce that the Rev. Gia Hayes-Martin, rector of St. John’s, Worthington, has accepted our invitation to chair the Nominating Committee. She will convene the committee’s retreat at Procter Center on October 7 and 8, when the committee will organize for business and assign other leadership positions and responsibilities. Throughout its work, the Nominating Committee will confer with consultant Anne Schmidt, who is providing experienced assistance to our search process.

Between now and next June, the Nominating Committee will be responsible for composing and circulating the diocesan profile; receiving applications for the position of bishop diocesan; and discerning the most appropriate candidates for the office. While the committee’s work will be conducted confidentially, we will provide periodic updates about its progress. In particular, you can expect to hear more later this fall about how to offer the Nominating Committee input as it creates the diocesan profile.

In the meantime, we ask you to pray for the members of the Nominating Committee; for those whom they will discern to be our candidates for bishop; and for continued healing for our Standing Committee’s president, Canon Scott Gunn.

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a bishop for this Diocese, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Yours faithfully,

The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Southern Ohio
