A HEARTFELT THANK YOU NOTE FROM GHANA

The arrival of a container in Mamprugu Moagduri made the district’s first successful surgery possible– and provided critical healthcare access to thousands of families in an instant.

Dear Denise,

I wanted to share that, over the weekend, we performed our first surgical case successfully. Bless you for the support.

Our district is one of the most deprived in Ghana. It has not seen a medical doctor since its inception. With this recent shipment, we hope to positively impact the lives of the people here now and forever.

Your support was so timely and appreciated.

Dr. Abdul Rauf Sulemana

Health Director of Mamprugu Moagduri

SOS SUPPLIES ARE SUPPORTING A NEW CLINIC AND ON-SITE MEDICAL CARE AT DUBOIS HUMANE SOCIETY

Providing supplies and equipment needed by shelters who care for injured and abandoned animals is a beautiful, but sometimes under-the-radar piece of the SOS mission. So we are especially happy to announce a new animal welfare partnership with the Dubois Humane Society in Jasper, Indiana. With two recent shipments of surgical and medical supplies totaling over 800 lbs, we have helped the busy, no-kill shelter open a spay and neuter clinic where they can also perform minor procedures for injured animals.

“This has been a longtime dream of ours,” says Executive Director Kelly Eckerle-Dixon. “The end goal in animal welfare is that we won’t have to exist. We have been spending as much as $5,000 to $10,000 a month outsourcing spay and neuter procedures that we can now do in-house.” The huge savings allows the rescue to spend money on other things like medical staffing and facilities– improving quality of care for all of their animal residents and readying them for adoption quickly and easily.

And this new clinic isn’t only for the shelter's residents. Dubois is now offering low-cost “snip” appointments for pets. Says Eckerle Dixon, “We want to make these procedures affordable and accessible.”

SUPPORTING SKILLS TRAINING FOR UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY NURSING STUDENTS

A 972-lb shipment to the Skills Lab at the UK College of Nursing will bring nursing to life for thousands of future nurses.

The first big shipment of medical supplies to the University of Kentucky College of Nursing is bringing exciting learning opportunities to thousands of nursing students in their Skills Lab.

While SOS has supported nursing programs University of Louisville, Galen and Ivy Tech for years, this is the first such partnership with the University of Kentucky. "I am so thrilled with our items from SOS which will be utilized by upwards of 2,000 students," says Dr. Suzanne Pilon, DNP, RN, Senior Lecturer at the lab. "Every student in our program will benefit from the items we received. We also share our space with the State Registered Nursing Assistant Program, so they benefit too."

The Skills Lab is an essential part of training for every student who comes through the UK nursing program. "This is where students learn to do all the things 'nurses do'-- starting IVs, wound care and things like placing nasogastric tubes," says Dr. Pilon. "We need a lot of resources to allow them all to get hands-on experience and build confidence." Four beds that were included in the shipment have made it possible to add more learning stations, allowing students to work in smaller groups of two and three. According to Dr. Pilon, the improved access to hands-on tools will have a big payoff in terms of student success: "This allows them to practice with real medical equipment in a safe space so they are well prepared when they are standing at a patient's bedside."

Cheers for our Volunteers!

In the last few weeks, our dedicated weekly regulars and several new groups sorted supplies going to both international shipments and local education program. Their work is changing and saving lives here and across the globe.
