Presbyterian Pilgrimage, Camp Gilmont, October 18-20, 2024

Dear Woodhavenites and friends,

This past week was an interesting one! We took in a Japanese student for a couple days as she was in transition. I got to have coffee with my U.S. representative, Congressman Marc Veasey. I ran a 4-Way Speech contest at our Rotary meeting for local high school students. We had a fun night of Pub Theology at Po Melvin’s with a nice group of 17! We went to First Presbyterian Bonham for a North Region visit for the presbytery committee I lead, "Committee on Representation".

Needless to say, I have kept busy and thus kept myself out of trouble.

Blessings,

Shane

Church News and Events

Irving Schools Foundation along with donors, sponsors, educators, and the Irving community celebrated "The 37th Annual Breakfast with the Stars" Awards Ceremony on May 1, 2024 to honor and provide awards to "2024" Irving seniors. More than 250 college scholarships were giving to celebrated seniors. WFAA Channel 8 and Local Celebrity, Cynthia Izaguirre, was the Awards Host and Woodhaven’s own Pastor Shane Webb gave the invocation and participated in the celebration.

The Woodhaven Presbyterian Church Scholarship Award winner was:

Kaya Jackson

Kaya Jackson graduates from Irving High School and will be studying Accounting at the University of Texas at Arlington next year. Kaya has been active in UIL Academics for three years and has earned a 3.8 GPA. She joined DECA this year and successfully moved on to DECA State. Kaya is an amazing senior and we wish her all the best and pray for continued success and a brilliant future.

Woodhaven Church has had an extra rotation added to our Family Promise Schedule. We will host a family on May 5-12, 2024. I sent out a SOS to our usual volunteers and we have had a great response. Within two days we had most of the slots filled by our wonderful volunteers. The only thing left is to provide dinner on Saturday evening, May 11. I can certainly do this, unless someone would like to volunteer to cover that meal.

Thank you so much for your quick responses and help....we have wonderful volunteers at Woodhaven and Redeemer!

FINAL CHRISTCARE SESSION FOR SPRING 2024

Tuesday, May 14

Mission Center

Our daytime ChristCare group is a small community of women of faith who strive to grow deeper in relationship with one another and with God so we can faithfully follow His commandment: "This is my commandment: Love one another in the same way I have loved you." (John 15:12 NLT)

We would love to have you join us. Although the theme for the year has been "Sacred Encounters," focusing on Jesus' encounters with ordinary people like us, each Bible Study lesson is totally independent so you will not be behind if you have not yet attended.

Date: Tuesday, May 14, at 10:30 a.m. in the Mission Center.

Lesson Teacher: Peggy Duvall

Lesson:  "An Ethiopian Eunuch Encounters the Good News of Jesus"

(Acts 8: 26-40)

Main Idea: The Word of God is an essential tool for expanding the reign of God

Special Note:  Please bring your favorite translation of the Bible and a magnifying glass (to read map)

Lunch Fellowship:  Angelo's Spaghetti & Pizza House, 1330 W. Pioneer Dr., Irving, TX 75061 (in honor of Vici Churchman who will be on vacation in Italy)

SPECIAL THANKS: We want to offer our special thanks to Ottlynne Caviness for coordinating our room setup. We appreciate all your volunteer help!

PREVIEW: Our next daytime ChristCare group will return on September 10th at 10:30 a.m. and we will begin the curriculum "Let Justice Roll Down: God's Call to Care for Neighbors and All Creation." (The 2024-2025 PW/Horizons Bible Study)

We are called to care for neighbors with all our hearts, with particular care for society's least powerful members who are disproportionately impacted by unjust systems. Scripture reminds us that we are called to speak out to urge our society to act for just transitions in this fast-changing world. Please join us as we all have something we can to do with our hearts and we need to share our ideas. New members are welcome to join at any time. The more we have the better our discussion! We can all learn from one another.

UPDATE ON DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

World Atlas

You may be wondering why we are reporting on this country? Well, Woodhaven sponsored a missionary couple, Dr. John Fletcher and his wife Gwenda, in the DRC from January 2016 through June 2018, when they retired. They performed medical surgeries, engineering, & hygenic education for women for many years, and we were privileged to meet them in Jan.2016 at a Woodhaven visit.

The country has been wracked with violence, tribalism, and especially in the east with Islamic terrorism. DRC is majority Christian with 50% Catholic, 20% Protestant, 9% Muslim, plus other smaller groups. The situation has deteriorated to the point where Catholic bishops have made a public statement: "Insecurity has become endemic, with its trail of killings even in the middle of the day, massacres and kidnappings of peaceful citizens in our towns and villages.”

DRC Bishops, (Radio Moto)

The Catholic Church leaders faulted the President Felix Tshisekedi-led government for leaving citizens to their own devices, saying: “The Congolese state is dead, and we, the governed, are abandoned to our sad fate; and we see no indication that today’s rulers are thinking about the well-being of the governed in the near future.” This is part of an overall deterioration in several African countries as Islamic radicals have increased their activity and geographical spread in the continent.
