Construction launched on affordable rental housing in Scarborough


The City of Toronto broke ground this week on the first of two buildings at 25 Sewells Rd. in Scarborough, which will provide 201 affordable rental homes. Currently, the city has 2,780 affordable rental housing homes and 507 market rent-controlled homes under construction. The development will include two buildings with a total of 318 affordable rental homes. This milestone is the culmination of a partnership between the City of Toronto, Government of Canada and the not-for-profit housing provider and developer, the Brenyon Way Charitable Foundation.

Ontario advancing construction of new Hwy. 7 between Kitchener and Guelph


The Government of Ontario announced construction will advance on the Frederick Street bridge in Kitchener, marking another milestone in the plan to widen Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph. Starting February 28, contractors will be invited to submit proposals for the replacement of the Frederick Street bridge. To accommodate the future widening of Highway 7, the bridge will be lengthened to ensure traffic can flow in both directions with shoulders and multi-use paths accessible for both pedestrians and cyclists.

UPDATE: $130M ROM architectural redesign will turn Toronto museum inside out


The recently announced Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) redesign aims to turn the iconic Toronto building inside out and dissolve boundaries between the public realm and the interior, says Siamak Hariri of Hariri Pontarini Architects. The initiative, OpenROM, will open up the museum even more to the public and create a cultural and civic hub for the city. It’s set to break ground soon and the museum will remain open to visitors during the three-year construction period.

Toronto set to gain another new skyscraper


Real estate developer Peter Freed of Freed Developments recently announced that the first-ever Freed Hotel and Residences tower will be located at Adelaide and Duncan, in Toronto’s downtown.


The skyscraper project is being designed by Chicago-based tall building experts Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, who are renowned for the next world’s tallest and most luxurious skyscraper Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia, as well as Central Park Tower in New York.

CCA asking for infrastructure clarity following Minister’s comments


Canada’s construction industry is demanding clarity from the government of Canada on future investment in new road infrastructure after comments made earlier this week by Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault.


Addressing attendees at a fundraising luncheon in Montreal, the minister promoted the virtues of public transit while criticizing the expansion of roadways. According to media reports from the event, Guilbeault explained that federal support to provinces for maintenance will continue, but claimed that existing road infrastructure “is perfectly adequate to respond to the needs we have.”

Bombardier builds new $670M private jet manufacturing facility in Mississauga


A state-of-the-art manufacturing centre for Bombardier private jets is under construction in Mississauga, Ont. A preview event was held in January and attended by Premier Doug Ford.


Bombardier is replacing the facility at Downsview Park, which was built in the 1960s, with the new complex, which is located at Pearson Airport. According to Bombardier, the $670 million assembly plant is the most “advanced private jet manufacturing facility in the world.”

Stephens in as AECOM Canada COO


Infrastructure consulting firm AECOM has named Katherine Stephens as its new senior vice-president and chief operating officer for its Canadian region. She will be based in the company’s Toronto office.


With nearly two decades of service at AECOM, Stephens will be responsible for driving long-term growth, providing operational leadership, and overseeing strategic insight and hiring for business activities in the region.
